Interesting. Presbies tend to be more accepting as a whole than some other denominations (*cough*Baptists*cough*) but I wasn't expecting my denomination (PCUSA) to change their position on gays anytime soon. As it stands, the new policy is internally inconsistent, and I'm not sure I like that.

As far as the issue of declining membership, the PCUSA congregation I'm part of is the fastest-growing church in our presbytery. Over the past couple years we've had an influx of Ghanaian immigrants into our congregation, so that has fueled growth for us.

And the Episcopalians and Lutherans have accepted them for a few years.

The problem I have here is that they still are not recognizing gay marriages, but they are permitting homosexuals to be pastors. There is an inconsistency there, and I would rather they move forward and be more accepting. I suppose this is the best compromise that could be hammered out, and it will probably change again in a few years anyways. This is starting to fit in better with PCUSA'a relatively socially liberal positions.

Women have been tradiontally denied pastorship in the past, but until recently I don't think the idea of a gay clergyman was even contemplated. If certain demoninations are green-lighting gay marriage but not gay clergy, that is indeed inconsistent. Here's a question for everyone: what would church & society look like if institutional marriage made no distinction between hetero- and homosexual unions?

Another question: Are current marriage prep & counselling programs sufficient?

I wonder how many divorces are the result of marriages that should never have happened.

Other way around, they (or rather we, since this is my denomination) are allowing gay clergy but not gay marriage.

Institutional marriage as in government-sanctioned? It probably wouldn't be too horribly different from how it is today, at least not from the perspective of a heterosexual.

Let us wait until the Roman Catholic Church
learns to accept homosexuality all together.

Having female clergy is a good start.

In your case, it will take more than skill. Are you currently a bishop?
