Hi
I seem not to able to find a job that will call back. I applied to a candy store a couple weeks ago and have not heard back since. I also applied to 8 or 10 stores online and have not heard back from them ether? DO they take the personality test seriously when applying online?

In order to answer that, we need more information. Was the personality test part of the interview?

I don't know what the job situation is where you live, but here in Michigan there is a lot of unemployment and so a lot of competition for jobs. Especially entry-level jobs that don't require much education or experience. My employer receives 1,000 applications a month for about 50 positions, and I am constantly being asked by friends, "I applied there, but I never heard anything back." The reason is they can't possibly call everyone. Since I am on the inside I am able to make recommendations, but of course I don't have any say in who they select.

So it may be that you are trying to get in to jobs where there already is a lot of competition; and yes, employers do use personality tests as part of the screening process. My employer does. Their rationale is it helps them to find the "best fit" for their people. But it also weeds out people too. And while we all know that discrimination does exist, it is very, very, very hard to prove.

Have you gone to an employment counselor? In Michigan we have a program called Michigan Works! which helps people with resumes, interviews, etc. I would try something like that. In the meantime, try not to get too discouraged. It probably isn't anything personal; it's the economic climate.

I'd say that if it was part of the application process then they definitely take them seriously. A lot of times you can fake your way through the simple ones.. just think of what a happy, well-balanced person might say and put that.

What kind of a job requires an online personality test?

I do know that I've applied for a few jobs that have screening questions online. E.g., "Are you willing to work any shift" and "Do you have at least a bachelors degree". From helping to hire someone in my department, I know that people who answer no to the questions are auto-screened out and their resumes don't even make it to HR. So yeah, I suppose they would take a personality test seriously.

Jobs like Target and Wal-Mart require personality tests. I'm not sure if you can apply for them online, though.
