You Should Get What You Deserve (A poem)

A poem I just wrote.

Not here for critique. Not sure what it's here for really.

You Should Get What You Deserve

I've seen the looks you get
The lines you've heard
The quality control
The price you pay for being what you are
The same on the inside as you are on the out

But you let it get away from you.

I don't know what it is that blinds you
Self-esteem? It's not your strongest suit
You're better than that.
You're better than this.
(You're better than me.)

Yet you pull behind you a wake you don't deserve
They take your dignity and roll it up and bag it up and throw it out
They curl it up at the bottom of your bed
And it's gone.

(Don't you feel violated?)

They punch above their weight
They get what they always wanted
And yet you settle
You should settle for nothing.

Someone who remembers you
No matter who's around
Someone who knows where it counts (if you know what I mean)
Sticks up for you
Appreciates what they have before it disappears
Deservedly, might I add!
Someone who doesn't need some old flame to keep the new one burning

You should get what you deserve
(And I don't mean that how it sounds)
You deserve the best.
And I don't even mean me.
(Well, maybe one day.)
