has anyone got,or been around Alaskan malamutes and know what their call/form of barking is like?
am asking as am very interested in getting a dog [the cat hater resident likes dogs],and this breed seems perfect.
what is their call like-is it quiet and soft, and easier to cope with,or is it as loud as other breeds, but a different noise?
here's photos and stuff about them for those who dont know them:

| I'm pretty sure their bark is just as loud as any other big dog. I have a Siberian Husky and she has a really piercing, high-pitched, screaming bark, and it is really loud. But I've heard that Malamutes like to eat cats, just like Huskies. But I guess I lucked out, because we have two cats too, and my dog doesn't bother them much. But she has tried to eat kittens (I didn't let her!), I guess they look too much like squirrels. |

I knew some people in Alaska that had one. It shedded hair BAD! I mean my pit bull sheds pretty bad but that malamute was a LOT worse. I don't know if that's typical of the breed or if that particular dog had an issue but those people practially had to use a rake to sweep the dog hair up.
That in itself would be something to consider if contemplating getting one.

Malamutes don't bark much but are prone to howl. The sound is very wolflike. When they do bark, though, the sound is loud and piercing, rather like a husky.
I know because I lived down the street from a Malamute for a long time, as well as sharing my life with two Siberian Huskies. I love northern breeds, but they can be quite a challenge. For one thing, they don't automatically obey you. They are difficult to train despite their intelligence, because they are easily bored and won't do what you ask them to unless they see something in it for them. (The easiest way around this is to bribe them with food.) They are generally good natured but will try to be the dominant creature in the house if you don't assert your superior position. They like to chew on furniture and dig huge pit craters in the yard, and they have a special liking for houseplants. Chomp. Same with small animals... they have a very acute hunting instinct which it's impossible to train out of them, and you have to watch them very carefully around prey animals and cats. And they SHED. My huskies shedded so much that when their fur was brushed out, we had enough dander to make ourselves another dog! Generally they shed seasonally, and in spring and autumn you must be prepared to brush them a lot. |

Malamutes have a mellow bark, but they do bark, and howl at the moon, they also love to dig, and will dig under fences, so you will need a dog run on a concrete slab. They are great dogs and are very intelligent and sweet, but they shed all the time, and need a lot of exercise and have to be walked lots. Depending where you live, its not recommended to have them in the lower 48 states, its just to hot for them, its even to hot here in southern Alberta. _________________ http://neuraldeviant.freesmfhosting.com |

I've been around one before, they don't bark very often, but it is a loud bark.

I live in Alaska and have been around lots of Malamutes,(there's a couple that live about 7 houses down from me) They are LOUD. Especially when a siren goes by and sets off the howling. They are very friendly and beautiful through. My friend had one and it didnt shed too badly but maybe that's because it was here in a colder climate and needed to hang on to its coat for warmth. In a hot climate I'm sure it would shed plenty and be somewhat miserable. Like a polar bear in Florida.
A girl who had a sled dog team up here also told me that because they are "working dogs" they MUST get a lot of exercise and "work" at something, to be really content. Even if its just carrying a "doggie backpack" with some weight in it. Otherwise they can become quite destructive. Espically if kept as indoor dogs. _________________ Did I dream this belief, or did I believe this dream?
