There are three main body types definitions used in sport: The ecto- meso- and endomorphic body type. Of course, most people are between two categories; very few people are either 100% ectomorph or 100% endomorph. Regardless of body definition, most people can become athletic. Keep in mind that many of the people on theese pictures have admitted to steroid usage.
Ectomorph
The most characteristic of an ectomorph is the light frame and the low bodyfat. Ectomorphs have an excellent metabolism, and many ectomorphs can eat (almost) whatever they want without gaining fat. However, ectomorphs are slow gainers when it comes to muscles, but that doesn't mean that they can't become very muscular. Some ectomorphic bodybuilders (such as Frank Zane) are well known for their aesthetic physics.
Many long distance runners are ectomorphs, since the main strength of the ectomorph is the endurance.
Some examples of ectomorphs: Brad Pitt, Paris Hilton, Frank Zane.
Ecto-mesomorph (most ectomorphic traits, but some mesomorphic)
Ecto-mesomorphs usually have a slightly heavier frame than ectomorphs, as well as a higher amount of muscle mass, and slightly more explosive muscles. Many swimmers and basketball players are ecto-mesomorphs. Long limbs, good endurance and a little better muscle building abilities than true ectomorphs, can make them excellent fitness competitors.
Some examples: Arnold Schwarzenegger (according to himself), Larry Scott, Jessica Alba
Meso-ectomorph (most mesomorphic, but some ectomorphic traits)
Meso-ectomorphs have an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, provided that the right training is there. Meso-endomorphs typically has a heavier frame than ecto-mesomorphs and better abilities to gain muscle mass. They usually have more explosive strength than endurance.
This bodytipe is common amoung short distance sprinters.
Some examples: Michael Johnson, Angelina Jolie
Mesomorph
Mesomorphs have medium to heavy frames, and have a v-shaped body. Their most characteristic feature is the ability to gain muscle mass and at the same time have a fast metabolism. Note that the right training must be there, and that mesomorphs who spends most of their time eating will get fat.
Mesomorphs usually have an outstanding explosive strength, while not beeing particularly good at endurance.
Many bodybuilders and strongmen are mesomorphs.
Some examples: Scott Mendelson, Ronnie Coleman, Mariusz Pudzianowski
Meso-endomorph
This is a far more common body type than true mesomorph. Meso-endomorphs have excellent muscle building genetics, as well as a medium to heavy frame. But unlike the mesomorphs, their metabolism is somewhat slower. Cardio workouts should be a part of their schedule, even when bulking. A meso-endomorphs metabolism will slow down after a while if he/she lowers their food intake. A meso-endomorph who is ripped of fat will look like a mesomorph.
Many strongmen and olympic lifters are meso-endomorphs.
A good example of a meso-endomorph is Lee Priest (the guy is somewhat obese of season)
Endo-mesomorph
The endo-mesomorph will gain fat easier than the meso-endomorphs. Their frame is usually heavy, their hips are wider and their faces are rounder than that of a meso-endomorph. Like the mesomorph, the endo-mesomorph are usually powerfull, and their short limbs will give them an advantage in some lifts (such as benchpress or deadlift).
Some olympic weightlifters are endo-mesomorphs.
Endomorph
Endomorphs typically have round bodys and gain fat easily. They usually don't have much muscles to begin with, but can gain muscle mass pretty quick. They also store more water than the other body types. This is not the best body type for athletes, but some power lifters are endomorphs. _________________ WP doesn't have a working first amendment.

I'm actually a mesomorph on an ectomorphic frame. I have a light bone structure but I carry a good deal of weight on it. I really should get back in shape. |

| Probably shouldn't use bodybuilding as a benchmark. Also, with the right training over a period of time and what you choose to eat will change your physiology. It is rally hard to do, and doesn't affect gross bone structure, but can happen. |

| I don't think bone-structure is subject to change. I think it just stays the same, like your eye colour or blood type. |

The somatotypic body type doesn't change either. _________________ WP doesn't have a working first amendment.

| I am 100% ectomorph. You do the math, 115lbs (and cannot for the life of me gain weight no matter what I eat or how much I work out, also cannot gain much muscle) and I'm 5'8". I'm female, oh and the old bone structure thing where you wrap one hand around your other wrist and where you thumb touches a finger determines your bone structure type (okay my thumb touches half way down the nail of my littlest finger). My wrists are just barely bigger around than my 7 yr old sons. |

Ditto, aspiemom1. 5'2, 53kg, steady weight but can eat anything without gaining weight. I do eat constantly and extremely healthily though - no processed foods, kilos of superfoods a week - which means a good metabolism. I don't really do sports but if I do it's all endurance, like long-distance walking or running. _________________ We are a fever, we are a fever, we ain't born typical...

| yea im definately a meso-ectomorph considering my strength to weight ratio is pretty good ( I weigh about 128 lbs but i can bench 240 ) its definately helped me out with wrestling... the only problem is i have absolutely terrible endurance... |

I already knew mine before: ectomorph. It's funny how popular media frowns upon the "endomorphic" body-type, but I've wanted to gain weight since I was around eight-years-old. And before anyone says anything about "well, it's not endomorphic people the media is talking about, or frowning upon, it's the fat-people-who-don't-exercise they frown upon". Yes, I know. But I wanted to not be so damn light and skinny.
It's just so annoying to appear like you can be broken if someone brushes up against you too lightly. Anyways, the muscle mass thing I've been working on just recently. It's nice. I'm just curious how buff I can get, since I've never done it before.
Ectomorphic people: FOCUS ON MUSCLE STRENGTH! Endomorphic people: FOCUS ON AEROBIC ACTIVITIES, for example: running, jogging, swimming,etc.. Mesomorphs...in between those. _________________ Uninvention Convention |

| i'd say i'm either a mesomorph or a endo-mesomorph. i've got wide shoulders, lots of muscle, v shape, i put on fat and muscle pretty easily, but i've found i lose fat easily too. |

Definite ecto-meso here, and proud of his body with all the hard work that's gone into it. Used to run marathons, now concentrate on kickboxing mostly, whilst occassionally training for, and subsequently running half-marathons when I fancy it.
On the up side it's difficult to gain fat (six pack looking nice!), my appetite is healthy but my body lets me know when i've had enough, I'm fairly strong for my size with a good power to weight ratio, i'm fast and agile and can jump really high, I can train for long periods of time and I look pretty good in almost any clothing with relative ease.
On the down side i'm always the smallest guy around, my strength compared to others is mostly a joke, and it can be harder to get noticed initially by girls and as such isn't a great first impression (though girls who are so shallow that all they care about is looks are definitely not girls i'd care to be with anyway).
All in all, apart from a little envy i'm happy with my somatotype _________________ The more I learn, the more I realise, the less I know! |

I would say I'm either Ectomorph or Ecto-mesomorph. I've inherited my dads runners body, we both are similar in that we are taller than average, built for speed and flexibility. I've always played left or right wing in football (fast running and long range passing, set plays, corners, etc) and used to be ridiculously fast when i was younger, though i'm not so light anymore I'm a little over 1.8m (5'11) and i think a healthy weight for me would be about 75 kilos (165lbs), but i've been pigging out so far this summer on teh chinese and pizza (naughty) I'm pretty clueless when it comes to fitness though, so what would you guess my body type was based on that description?

At a rough guess, Id say a meso-ectomorph, but probably more of an ectomorph. It takes forever to put any weight on. _________________ I stand alone on the cliffs of the world. |

| Endo-mesomorph. I am stocky, but don't really have short limbs, in spite of being short. |
