In psychology class and in a BBC documentary called The Human Mind, part 3 Making Friends, I learned about two different types of smiles. One involves the eyes(true smile) and the other doesn't involve the eyes(fake smile). I notice a lot of fake smiles when I talk to people. I assume I am also giving off either a fake smile, although I barely smile, or I glare. There has always been something about my eyes that is very unsettling to people. I've made lots of enemies becuase of my facial expression. It's amazing how much hatred one can elicit from people by not smiling. I got to learn how to fake a real smile. Clueless on how to, but I think I'm on to something.

Fake smile= Pan American smile.

Real smile= Duchenne smile.

Those are the actual names as far as I know.

I can fake smiles well enough to fool everyone but myself.
I have never met anyone who can fake a smile well enough to fool me.
I always think that people should just not smile if they don't feel like smiling.

Fake smiles are better for photos.

My real smile looks lame, I think, and computer geeks often say it's ugly. My mum thinks it's lovely. Rolling Eyes

I am fascinated by the Duchenne smile, I heard of this on a radio show.
I agree that people shouldn't fake smiles, they should only smile if they feel like it.
When I see someone with a genuine smile I find it extremely attractive.

My brother has given up on smiling for photos. He says that no matter what he does, he looks stupid or stoned.

People tell me to smile. I'm told I have a great smile, but if I'm not laughing or really happy then I find it hard to do a convincing smile.
Like in pictures.
It's hard I worry about how my face looks.

If you want to smile in a photo, here's a tip:

Try to look completely deadpan in said picture.

it helps if:

a. you announce that you are trying to do this
b. You actually do try
and
c. You try to do this with at least one other person who you like relatively well.

It's a win-win situation that way, but you might smile easier. Myself, I think of somthing funny, laugh silently, and freeze my face.

I'm not able to fake smiles. I give sincere smiles or no smile, I can't help smiling with my eyes, because I'm cheeky...

I have some level of independant voluntary control of almost every muscle on my face (a lot of them I can only move in pairs, like the two on each side of one's nose), in other words, I can fake a smile very well.

Does anyone know of an online anatomical atlas with a labeled image of the face?

Apparently only a very small percentage of the population has voluntary control over the muscles associated with the duchene smile. For these people, moving those muscles can actually cause them to feel happy.
Or so I heard on talk radio.

I think that smiling makes me happy, but it could just be a sort of psychological association rather than any real biochemical trigger point.

Hold a pen between your teeth without your lips holding the pen and you'll feel happier.

Hold a pen using only your lips and you'll feel worse.

This has actually been demonstrated to work in studies.

I can't fake a smile - even if I think I'm doing a good job, it doesn't fool anybody. I guess the rest of my face is loudly saying what I'm really thinking.

Interesting, Serissa.
I tried it, and felt a little like a monkey, literally. Very Happy
