Okay I was here in the computer lab and there was a girl at the front who was acting quite aspieish (having never met a comfirmed or even suspected aspie in my life it would be cool to meet one) which got me to thinking how would you ever know if someone was an aspie; most people would find it rude to ask (considering there probably not and see autism as a bad thing, true screw them but still) and theres not that many of us and alot of weird people so we need something that makes sense to us but not to anyone else that can be used to identify us. What you all think of my idea. Smile

How would a secret sign help identify someone that may not know they have AS or might have never heard of it? Confused Rolling Eyes

I think it's a wonderful idea. It would have to be something that if the other person didn't recognize it as a sign, you could pretend it meant something else or you were doing something else, know what I mean?

Very Happy

I ask people right out if i think they are autistic, and i'm usually right.

tried that once with a guy I thought at least was pretty obvious, he nearly decked me (before realising I could take him easily.)

There have been similar kind of signs made before, autism bracelet things/whatever they're called but if something major was to happen in the way of helping us to spot other autistics,it would need maximum media awareness, plus be available to people who do not have internet access.
Perhaps a small pinbadge of some sort?

We could wear shirts that say: I'M AUTISTIC, GIVE ME A BISCUIT

Because biscuits are the favorite food of all autistics, because it rhymes. (joking)

we could be like spies and have a special phrase with a scripted response like something about snow falling in moscow or eagles taking flight. Cool except it could be a quote from an obscure song or film that only (a)spies are likely to recognise.

Any signal that someone has AS would have to be disseminated over the internet, which is by no means secure, family members would most likely learn about it and blab about it, and it still wouldn't to anything for those that are undiagnosed and have never heard of AS, so therefore this thread is still full of crap!

Endersdragon,
If you think that this girl is AS, then try to initiate a conversation about it with her, but forget about all this cloak and dagger BS.

oh, i thought you meant like a hand-sign, kinda like the peace-sign, the star trek sign, the devil-sign, the middle finger etc. i think it would be nice to have our own hand-sign (dunno what it's really called)

Aspergian Island came up with the idea of wearing something orange around your wrist to signal you're an Aspie. They call it the "Apergian Passport". I got one of those orange silicone bracelets, but then they turned into a huge fad and you couldn't assume anything. The other site suggested using orange string or something so it would look more deliberate and less like you're just following peer pressure. So I switched to orange shoelaces on my black sneakers. I also have a blue silicone bracelet with the puzzle pieces on it.

What's really weird is that a lot of people ask me what the puzzle bracelet is for and I tell them it's for "autism awareness" but nobody has EVER asked me why I would be interested in autism. Same thing when I took vacation leave this year to go on a 5-day fund-raising trip for the Autism Society - everyone knew where I was going and what I was doing and saw the pictures when I got back, but not one person asked me why I did it. I don't know if it's because they figured out I'm Aspie and so the reason for the bracelet and the trip is obvious, or if it's because they hear the word "autism" and it scares them away, or if they're just genuinely not interested.
