I've had a very tough life and I've dealt with everything life has thrown at me. Surprisingly, there's one thing that demoralizes me and I am unable to deal with: when I need a heavy object removed from the house.

My microwave oven short-circuited and I can't take it to repair because I can't lift it. I can't throw it away because I can't carry it down the stairs. I can't buy a new one because I can't keep leaving broken microwave ovens all over the floor of my tiny apt. I've nobody to ask for help, nobody to give me an idea of what to do.

I feel so powerless, so impotent, so alone... :(

People who deliver microwaves, cookers, fridges often take the old one away for you.

Macroworries topic

I have had microwave ovens for years. Greentea, how did yours go belly up?

The ones I have had were quite small and not expensive. You have to be careful and not turn them on before the food/beverage is placed inside.

I heat a cup of water for 1:20 min ONLY. I never boil water or use microwave directions for cooking. I use my stove oven, stovetop elements and a timer. You have to watch your food cook, almost babysit it. But I like cooking, and do not mind being in the kitchen.

A plate of food is no more than 2:40 min.

For an old microwave which is kaput, put it in a bag (no glass or breakable parts) and kick it down the stairs. If anyone complains, just tell them you cannot lift it and would they either help or mind their own business. :P

Please respond and tell me how these ideas work. :)

Brilliant!!

I only use the microwave oven to warm some leftover food or tea or milk. So I'm thinking maybe it's not worth buying a new one... I don't know, I'm confused.

Microwise topic

Greentea, maybe you could buy a used one (make sure it is safe) or buy a convection oven.

Maybe a new one could be under warranty or else have a good exchange/refund policy.

Is the wiring in your apartment adequate? Sometimes electrical short circuits can be a problem, and you may need a surge protector. I have one for my computer and TV, but I may get one for my microwave oven now that it is on my mind.

I hope you are not really "impotent." I think this is primarily a man's problem!

Also, make sure the bag is thick enough and tied tight before that microwuss makes its final journey to appliance hell...

What a fate for a poor microwave oven! I got it from my sister for my wedding and it lasted 12 times more than my marriage (which lasted only a year) and even outlasted my siblingry with her. Maybe the appliance is very emotionally-charged...

I was thinking last week about buying a surge protector, indeed. Now in winter there are lots of power surges. I'll buy one for the computer asap! I'm sure the problem was the power surges, and I'm sure that's what ruined my previous computer too.

You should really come here, look around my apt and give me a few tips, Sue. I've asked you before, but it's been taking you a while to buy that plane ticket. And now you probably think we're warring in the streets in my neighborhood, so no chance, LOL

If I was there, I would help you take the microwave down the stairs.

Thank you, cube. I have a course of action now. I'll find out how much it costs to get it tested. If it's not much, I'll push it slowly and then lift it down the flight of stairs, get it tested and if it's not too much money to repair it, I'll have it repaired. If not, I'll roll it down the stairs. I'm not buying a new one. I'm boycotting microwave ovens till they make them light enough for female Aspies living alone to take to repair.

Thank you, just-me. :)

If I get it fixed, I'll stand at the foot of the stairs with puppy eyes till someone helps me carry it up the stairs back home.

Why not get a dolly to help lug this type of stuff around? Can you ask one of your neighbors and/or someone in the social network to help you out with it, maybe for a little bit of cash?

gosh it must be very old if it's that heavy. the more modern ones are lighter (although they still weigh like a small tv). um i'd get a plank to slide it off the bench onto a trolley and then just shove it either in a cupboard or cover it and use it as a side table/pot plant stand.

apart from that, get your screwdriver out and take it apart, i don't think they're complex and it will be easier to dispose of in pieces.

You couldn't ask a neighbor to help you out? I shudder to think what this world has come to if asking a neighbor to help you out with something like that is considered wrong. :(

I feel like that here where I live too. Nobody seems to know their neighbors. I don’t know if it’s just my problem or everyone’s. It seems like if you don’t have a family or a friend living near by you’re s**t out of luck. It seems even worse with the younger generation. All the people my age or younger seem to ignore me. People only care about themselves.

Is it like that in your country too?

Absolutely. People nowadays invest in money, not in people. Because money pays better than people. Money can get you more than loving relationships can. Or at least that's what most believe nowadays. It didn't use to be like that. People needed people once.

Well, the microwave oven is in the car, fixed for little money. I managed the way down, but now I've to try the stairs up, which I think will be harder.

Thank you all for the wonderful support, I wouldn't have made it if I didn't have you behind me!

And indeed, I had thought to put some plants on it!
