holy haberdashery, you got summoned for jury duty?

claiming AS may get you out of it. You can call or write them a letter to get your jury duty date postponed. Chances are they won't pick you for jury duty anyways. But, whatever you do, don't skip the date of you're jury duty. You will get in trouble if you do.

Do you think that you are not qualified, or do you just not want to serve?

I've been to jury duty 3 times, my last was 12 years ago. I was never picked and 2 of the 3 times, didn't even make it to the selection process.

I know people can get excused for medical reasons, like one of the times I was called, a woman was excused because she had heart trouble and it was well documented, and in some places, senior citizens can get excused on the basis of age, but I don't know about AS.

All this talk of jury duty reminds me of an episode of 7th Heaven I saw recently in reruns. Basically, one of the daughters is called for jury duty and she gets upset because she doesn't want to serve because of the inconvenience. Her police officer boyfriend gets upset with her over her attitude because if it wasn't for juries, the people he arrests wouldn't get fair trials and sent to prison.

She finally goes to court and when she realizes the defendant was a guy she dated in high school, the judge excuses her from the jury. At that point, she realizes that it is important to serve after all and asks the court official in charge of the juries if there's a way she could serve and she's told that since she was excused, she's done until called again.

A very different perspective on it I think.

I got out of jury duty once by telling them I had been diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Social Phobia (which I have). I simply wrote that on the forms they sent me, sent them back, and nothing happened. So I guess that was a good enough excuse.

I would recommend taking it a bit more seriously than I did (I was 19 at the time and did not care at all).

A different time I got out because I said I was in college and could not miss class (which was also true).

I can't possibly imagine myself on a jury.... huh shrug huh

Once you have received your summons, check with the Clerk of the Courts. He can tell you whether you will be excused or not. Be sure to bring proof of diagnosis when you inquire.

I know two people who have gotten out of this. One claimed asthma symtoms when stressed out and said that he didn't want to be wheezing and using his inhaler during jury duty, therefore disrupting the court. The other got out of it on religious grounds; my religion says that I must not judge the actions of others. I got the impression that jury duty is pretty easy to get out of if you don't want to do it. However, i hope that your reason is not that you consider yourself to be underqualified beacuse of your AS. I dont imagine this to be true. The fact that your so concerned about the responsibility involved will probably make you a very thorough and fair jurer!

I think don't try to get out of it unless you really can't do it for some reason.

Imagine what difference it would make if a defendant has Aspergers and the other jurists think they're guilty and lieing because he doesn't make eye contact or their body language otherwise seems to lack the tendencies of an innocent NT.

It would be a dangerous precedent to be excused on the basis that someone with AS is not capable of rendering a decision in such a matter. Sensory issues yes, but cognitive rationality on an issue of law/morality, a resounding no.
