I'm an ex mac user so i don't know what's around, i just spent half an hour googling, downloaded one which turned out not to be able to resize (image size in pixels), it's only a decorative/paint/cropping program.

The main thing i want is to be able to resize pix to post on the net, i'm not that fussed about retouching or 'effects'.

The one I had for mac was very simple and basic (imagewell), that was fine.

The Gimp Seconded (Dokken, you beat me to it).

Because ... if you decide to take things back to the mac or over to linux, you won't have to learn (or buy) another paint proggie again.

I actually didn't realize Gimp ran on Windows.

It's strange, since I almost always use Mac or Linux I've learned the Unix-related apps and then I have to search around to find an equivalent Windows program when I learn they won't run in Windows. I've yet to really have that problem in reverse.

These days when I check out freeware or open-source alternatives for applications for the windows platforms, one of my main criteria is that the software must be ported across Windows, Mac and Linux.

I've got an area on our network where I "offer" the software to people within my company for use - and I'm happy to be able to say that "if you want, you can take it home with you regardless of what type of computer you have - and there are no licence fees at all".

yeah..I use the Gimp a lot, mainly to make thumbnails for my pics...;) I'm finally getting stuck; because the Windows distro (can I use that word and not face damage from Linux folks?...;) now only seems to support XP, and I'm still using Win 2k.

BTW- deviant art has some addons (hoo boy...pages and pages) for the Gimp, if you need 'em.

Xp has probably matured enough now. You can try it!

But seriously, there is a portable version of gimp that doesnt modify the registry. its identical to the full version. Maybe give that a try.

I'll throw in Paint.NET, purely because I hate The GIMP.

Eh, for major photo edits, and crating complex things, the motion of the Gimp has passed, and for smaller scale stuff, Paint.Net, and of course, for simply a canvas and some tools, the default paint program.

95% of all open-source programs have been ported to windows... Gimp, Blender, etc etc...

That said, Gimp is, IMO, superior to even Photoshop...
