Is it uncommon for aspies to be interested in dance and take classes in dance such as ballet, jazz and hip-hop. Is it something you've been obsessed with? I started taking ballet when I was 25 and then about 3 years ago i started jazz & hip-hop too.

I got really into swing dancing for a couple of years recently, going to dances and taking evening classes up to 4 days per week at one point.

I started taking dance classes about a month ago in an attempt to meet new people and learn a skill that is fun, interesting and healthy. I absolutely enjoy it!

I was obsessed with dance & modern choreography (especially Twyla Tharp), when I was in my early twenties. I never took lessons, though (aside from a ballroom dancing class in college.)

I go salsa dancing classes on a Friday night to meet new people but I find it difficult talking to people.

I have done a lot of ballroom latin and folk in the past, I so wish that I could do the jive better. I once went along to a 1950s music club packed with people who jive at about twice the normal speed, that was great fun.

I attended ballroom dancing classes about 1,5 years ago and began to learn hustle six months ago. I find it rather funny, interesting and healthy (a nice replacement for fitness; improves coordination and makes AS traits milder), but still difficult: new movements are difficult to copy, girls in the group say that sometimes I'm moving like a bear.

I think that perhaps the social and technical aspect of dancing can be distressing to some ASD folk. In general though I enjoy dancing and learning to control and contort and move my body in a number of differing ways. It is also not uncommon for ASD related individuals to enjoy moving in non conventional ways and dance I feel can be very non conventional.

Welcome to Wrong Planet! If it makes you happy and doesn't harm others my motto is to go on enjoying what you do.

I wouldn't say I'm particularly interested in dance but I was auditioning for Romeo and Juliet (and West Side Story) at the local theatre when I was 13. I didn't make it into R&J cause I couldn't hold the sword at eye level for half an hour (okay maybe not quite that long but maybe 5-10 minutes) and I did make it into WSS (which did have more dancing of course). I also spent half a semester at a charter school for the arts. Where I managed to fail science because I'm not very good at paper mache but I was the dance teachers favorite partner despite how I would often trip myself up on solo stuff so I didn't look like a queer (give me a break, I was 11). She always made comments about my posture, how limber I was and how I had a natural talent for it. What a waste of talent I am.

If I had a girlfriend or even just a friend I felt comfortable who did dance I would certainly want to give it another shot.

With the caveat that I have no diagnosis, I love dancing. My son loves it too. Neither of us is the most graceful person, but enthusiasm and a good memory are valuable traits too.

My favorite hobby is salsa rueda and it's excellent for shy people, because you don't have to find a partner.

I have always really enjoyed dancing. Have taken a few classes when I was younger in tap and jazz and tried salsa and some ballet. Even though I don't go to any classes I still occasionally have a go at home.

My GF always would like me to dance. It is something I could never feel comfortable with and would never do.

I think it's sort of uncommon. Congrats to you for dancing for so long.

I'm involved in a latin dance class. That class works me a lot harder than any other program, although I did take a Zumba class and that's pretty much a heavy workout for my lungs, but I still like it.
