There is a similar issue when age is involved. In PPR when someone realized they didn't actually have an arguement I have been called "young" and close to a personal attack because of my age (a couple unnamed posters), because I am younger than some people that means I do not know what I am talking about
I like that my age is there (I could easily remove it) because people have a better understanding of what I am coming from, but it also can have an adverse affect. |
Sometimes it's important for others to know your position/situation/state, if you want to express something about that, talk subjectively about experiences, relate to others in a similar position, etc. But the rest of the time it just seems to get in the way. It's all about context. Sometimes age, gender or whatever can be a necessary context but often it isn't, and it's interesting (I would argue it's useful, even) to be able to communicate without irrelevant contexts sometimes. |
