Germany managed to produce 35% of peak electricity demand from solar power on Friday and 50% of peak demand on Saturday.

You guys still think it so outrageous to abandon fossil fuels?

There is a sexy widget on this website that shows you the figures:

It's really nice that they're so efficient. There's something outrageous, though. I've seen some of their solar panel fields right in the middle of an agricultural region, and they're not exactly an asset to the landscape. Which, as a tourist, is rather disappointing. I support the green energy thing, though. The sooner we harness it properly, the better. Our economy won't be based on obsolete fuel, and we'll be able to stick it to Saudi Arabia's increasingly absurd demands.

It's not like giant cooling towers are an asset to the landscape, but we put up with those.

I actually find renewable energy plants to be rather neat looking. There's a windfarm that I drive passed when I go home from university and it's very cool looking.

How it looks is irrelevant. How much reliable baseline power it produces is the essential question.

When they can make a full size (or even mid size) electric SUV or pickup, or something along the lines of an electric Mustang GT that can perform the same as their fuel combustion counterparts then we'll talk.

electric engines have a theoretical better performance since they deliver full torgue at all times and can come in huge sizes
now all we need a proper battery or fuel cell capable of running the damn thing for more than a few hundred miles, or make it road refillable ro rechargeable, liked theidea of a small ethanol turbine to power the engines directly.

[Sigh] That was an offhand comment expressing a personal opinion that is in no way related to efficiency of renewable energy. If you want to take that up I suggest you do it with the OP, considering he was the one talking about it.

What do the Germans do at night?

Try generating solar power at night. See how successful you are.

I think perhaps you take me wrong, I appreciate your humor and try to engage you in a similar manner. Personally I would definitely want to see electric vehicles that can match performance of conventional vehicles
