It didn't occur to me that I have an obvious case of autism until now. I think most people think I am probably stupid or slow, and I think I might be that too. I can hardly drive well, I can't memorize text that well, and my comprehension is slower I think. It's like my family wants to pretend I'm so smart, when I'm not.

I was diagnosed with autism, but I lead myself to believe I don't have it just so I could pretend to be normal... and in looking at all my reactions, words, and more it is so painfully obvious that something is wrong with me.

Has anyone ever felt that way?

yes i have felt that way at some points in my life, maybe not to the extent you have but i cannot tell. i spent years struggling with written english because i have quite a big deficit in written work. my verbal skills are very good but my written skils are rubbish when they should be the same, caused a lot of frustration and teachers thought i was not trying.

If theres anything wrong with you, its not because of autism. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Why couldn't autism be something that at least makes me different from the person I would be if I didn't have it? I was thinking, if I never had it, who would I be?

Intelligence is not solely based on one's ability to drive, one's memory, or one's processing speed--creativity, logical reasoning, visualization, and so, so man other factors tie into it-- and, anyways, worth is not solely based on intelligence. The wiring of your brain--autistic or not--provides you with a one-in-approximately-seven-billion view of the world that contributes something wonderful to the people around you. While parents do have the tendency to want to believe so badly that their children are "normal" that they actually and fully believe it, they find so much more to you than your perceived "slowness"; your personality, your interests, and all the minor things that comprise your "youness" enriches their lives greatly.

Never lose faith in you, for you are the most wonderful asset you have.

Sounds a little like you may have dyslexia it is often co-morbid with both AS and HFA - and it can play havoc on reading and writing abilities - which can spill over into other mental processing. Both my brother and I have dyslexia and we both have and have had problems with processing the written word. I have a long list of words that I must mispronounce while spelling them to get them to come out correctly - to this day I have trouble sounding out words - this despite the fact that my vocabulary is truly massive. Dyslexia also causes me to read more slowly than the average person. - Yet when my IQ was tested as a child in some areas I tested well with in genius range (Math, problem solving, pattern finding to name a few) and in other areas I tested out dumber than a box of rocks (word processing and social interactions). It is now common for diagnostic centers to use an extensive IQ work-up to confirm AS. They are not looking for either high or low intelligence but rather the variation in levels in many of the tests to indicate AS.

So, yes, in some areas you will have defecates but I will bet that in other areas you do quite well. The one caveat is that in the areas you do well you may not even be really aware of them - as you just do what you do - and don't spend much time thinking about it as those functions come easy and thus you spend you time worrying about the stuff that causes you problems.
