I say "nothing much". I don't know what it[s supposed to mean exactly. When people say it as a greeting, and not as a question, it really annoys me.

Nothing.
Nothing much.
Same old.

All stock replies. The person is asking you what's going on, as a social ritual. They don't really want to know and would find it annoying if you told them.

Responding back with another "sup" is also perfectly fine. That would end the interaction in a friendly manner.

It is a friendly total lack of communication.

Generally, no fruther convresatio is expected in the situation, as far as I can pereceive.

Whatever your respose (e.g., "Nothing much"), I recommend turning the question back on them (e.g, "How about you?, or simply "You?) because this puts the conversation ball back in their court.

"The opposite of down."

"Away from the centre of the earth."

I don't understand today's slang, and don't want to. I would feel stupid even giving an answer to this question.

you can jsut say 'sup' back or 'yo' or 'hey' or 'hi' or *nod head* or *high five*

people asking 'whats up?' as a greeting usually arent really asking you anything

they just mean 'hi'

if you do have something particularly interesting to say that applies to what you are doing or to what you have done recently, then it would be appropriate to start talking about it.

What the heck? What are people supposed to say to that? X_x
It just means "I recognize that you are there, and you have my attention briefly if there is anything that you would like to say or ask." It's a social nicety. You can get away with "hello."

That's what it means! Oh!

Well, when I greet someone, I usually just say, "Hello" or "Hi," but if someone says "Sup" I usually say, "I'm fine, thank you!" I'm a lot more polite than that!

I read "sup" as the equivalent of "what's up?" My response like a lot of other people would be "nothing." I have a step-brother who speaks using that kinds of vernacular.

When someone asks me "what's up?", I usually use a creative comeback. Something like "the lights on the ceiling" or "my cholesterol". Surprisingly, even hardcore NTs respond well to this joke.

I say "Sup indeeeeeeeed" because I got it from a cartoon on the internet, and I thought it was hilarious. It makes most people say "wtf?" though.

Saying 'Sup back is the most acceptable.

It's kinda like that beer commercial where everyone's calling each other and going, "WASSUP?" Same thing. They're not really interested in what's up, it's just a stupid greeting. Give it right back and you're cool.
