What should I major in?

I'm having trouble figuring out a field to major in it. I'm starting College next year and need some help. My interests are Japanese culture, animation/cartoons, and video games. The thing is I like drawing but I rarely do it and when I do it is only OKish it's nothing spectacular. I also like video games a lot but programming seems hard. My math skills are almost abysmal! So, that leaves me with something centering around Japanese culture. I have NO idea where that will take me. Does anyone have any advice?

I hate to word it like this: But trying to get a career as a software developer in the video game industry is extremely hard. Programming is also nothing like playing games(It was the worst class I have ever taken in my entire life; and I thought it was much more boring/tedious than hard) so it might be best to stay away from it.

It seems obvious that since you are interested in Japanese you should take Language classes in Japanese. Japanese culture classes are fun too. The only problem I see is the source of income for the future- Learning Japanese looks good on a resume but you will probably need to also complement it with a degree that makes money.

I'm not trying to say that you couldn't major in Japanese and have a better time with a good course selection; I'm just trying to put across that you can make a whole lot of money if you compliment the language with something like Business, Architecture, Engineering(Eh Programming ><_); Etc.

You are probably way too young to be worrying about all that now anyway so just take some general courses at College and see which one you like....

Well, actually I'm going to a Community Collge. I hope that didn't just bump me down a little bit. It's called Wake Tech Community College and it is located in North Carolina.

try taking some Japanese language courses, I loved the ones I took, but really depends on teacher as well, so might have to try a few times to see how you like it, then maybe you can go for 'communications' with a minor in Japanese? While I don't believe any aspie would be particularly keen on a "communications" major, you can do things other than talk, like write columns and whatnot, so could get a job being a journalist for a Manga magazine or something... who knows, but having a Japanese Minor can be handy for resumes and stuff, so doesn't hurt to start with that

but don't exclude yourself to things that you like as a hobby, if there is anything more academic you like, you should test that as well. I like Japanese culture, anime, manga, drawing, horses and stuff, but academically I'm going for engineering, because I also like design, fixing problems, and buildings and whatnot. A major I'm really interested in as well is Graphic Communications, which is a mix between drafting, and auto-cad and whatnot (get engineer's plans for a design, then you draw it up on the computer, for presentation purposes and whatnot)


theres a lot of options, and point of truth is, not a lot of people get into a job specific of their major. Engineering is a tad specific there, but people with communications or business majors can get all sorts of jobs, that aren't exactly called "business" or "communications," so getting the major is one step, finding a job will be different, so major doesn't ALWAYS define your job-- if you end up choosing a broader one, might have more of a chance of variations in your job choices, and choosing one more selected for you and your interests, whereas if you choose a more specific job like programing or engineering, your job choices will tend to be more specified


so I suggest goign for a general ed for now, maybe communications major later, and taking some Japanese language and culture courses (I don't know if Wake Tech has them... are you considering staying there, or transfering?)

I plan on transferring to a bigger University. Maybe UNC?

I think your best bet is to take some Japanese language courses and maybe do an International Studies major with a focus on Asia or something like that. International business might be a good idea, too. We have all of those programs at my school

The thing with us Aspies is finding a major that will give us motivation to work hard. I came in to college as an econ major but the math bored me to an extreme, so I changed to Political Science. It's one of the worst majors for Aspies because a lot of it requires a lot of public speaking and trying to empathize with people to solve public policy problems, but I've found it has played a radical role in helping me become more high functional. At first I struggled but I watched others and know a few NTs that have stage fright. They gave me some ideas that they use like finding a point in space to look at in the audience that isn't actually a person so I'm not making eye contact to make things easier.

People will generally be helpful and I would strongly recommend asking a freshman adviser at your school for help. They are usually patient and helpful people, though I don't know how community college really works.

Well Japanese course than tranferred to Mason into New Century College International Studies is good too.

I'd say major in the Japanese language. I have a friend who is majoring in that and is planning on becoming a translator.

I already finished my studies (chemistry), but I found it useful to separate personal life and my studies. Therefore my (free time) interests are different than my field of studies. I find it useful to go back to my interests and just forget the studying, so I can cope with my studies later.

I still have the tendency to separate different things now I have a job. So the materials of my job (mail, folders, materials, cd's) are in my study and are not allowed in my bedroom or living room.

But I do not know if you have that tendency?
