I have been clicking my teeth for the last 8 months or so and can't seem to stop. Has anyone had any success with kicking this habit? I have tried to transform the habit into finger tapping or toe tapping and it hasn't worked yet. I guess that initial worsening of the behavior when I try to stop is interfering with my progress. BTW I do not have autism, I am bipolar.

I had a bad problem with teeth-grinding (bruxism), unconsciously and at night, to the point of damaging my teeth and suffering jaw-pain (TMJD). My dentist made a cast of my teeth and then a mouth guard, which I wore at night while sleeping until the problem disappeared. There is a cycle of grinding and muscle tension, which the guard breaks by maintaining the muscles in a more relaxed position.

It was expensive, but cheaper than repairing the long-term damage.

I wasn't even aware that I ground my teeth at night until my jaw seized up (TMJD) and my dentist told me the cause. I tap my back teeth together quite a lot: I was tapping them whilst reading this Rolling Eyes

My dad sometimes clicks his teeth when talking, but yeah if anything I find it annoying....I mean its obviously not his fault, but my brain has a tendency to focus on it sometimes. But yeah I hate it because I don't want it to be an issue but it makes my ears feel weird. lol. but such is life.

I beat out rhythms to myself in my head. It's the habit? stim? I picked up after my parents made me stop sucking my thumb. Although to be honest, it wasn't my parents who made me stop; it was my brother. After all, he was the one who threatened to break my arm if I didn't . . . Rolling Eyes

I used to just beat them around in a circle, but now I just do rhythms or the ol' OCD thing about doing something until it feels right. Whee!!!

I do the same thing. I only do it with my mouth closed, though.

I tap, grind and clench my teeth. Badly too.

I've done a ton of damage to my mouth. Up to 70% of the bone mass in my jaw is gone in places. I've broken 5 teeth in the last 4 years, and all of the ones I have left in my mouth have hairline cracks in the enamel.

I only do it when I'm awake, and I don't realize I'm doing it 95% of the time.

Sad

Yeah, I do this. I even had to get braces as a teen and my teeth are kinda ridgey now as a result of years of grinding and clicking.
