My kind loving grandparents now shun me because my mother revealed to them that I often lay under my matress,sleep under the bed, and sit in my closet for extended periods of time. I was yelled at by both of them over the phone at school yesterday. "Why do you do stupid stuff like that?!!! How old are you?!! It's time for you to grow up!! are you stupid?!! Yes you ARE stupid if you're laying UNDER the matress like that!!! Your mama should just take the whole bed out of the room and see what you lay under then!! I am tired of hearing about all this stuff you do! It's ridiculous,don't you know it's ridiculous?!! Yes you do know! Do you need help?!! Do you need to take some kind of medicine?!! The stay frome under the dog gone mattress. You got to stop acting like that!!!...." and so on and so forth. Thanks mom. Thanks for screwing up every thing....then again it is my fault for being weird. I could be normal if I tried right? Beacause I do everything because I WANT TO right? I'm in control of every feeling that over comes me? I make her do things in anger(like slap me in the face or crack my skull) but when she makes me mad yelling is my choice?!! I'm the one with the problem?!!! I have the issues?!! I hate people....this is why I hate people. They make no sense.

Ahh... people are frightened by the unusual. I'd guess your grandparents will come around eventually. They'll soon realize it's kind of silly to shun someone for a few quirks that don't hurt anyone else.
And on the off chance they are stubborn and continue to shun you. It's their problem, not yours. Yea, it sucks, but getting worked up over it won't help anything. |

| they don't sound very kind and loving to me. just saying. some people are very attached to their own social/cultural norms. it used to normal in ancient rome to go to the theatre and watch people be mauled to death. |

Yes, because criticizing a person for sleeping under the mattress is the same as watching an elephant gore a person. |

no, but social/cultural norms are just that. socially acceptable ways to behave. in your mind there is no comparison, why, because gore is VERY socially unacceptable to you. |

I love enclosed spaces as well, while I don't sleep under my mattress, I have always loved being in my closet growing up, my mother always thought this was odd and tried to send me to the hospital (Again) for more assestments.
I was never called stupid for it though

It could be that they are just worried about how you'll fit in, and think that if they tell you off enough, you'll start acting in a way such that the rest of the world won't notice your differences. We all know that's impossible, and unreasonable, but they may not know that at all.
On the other hand, they could just be intolerant jerks [no offense intended].
By the way, I slept under the bed sometimes when I was younger. Didn't make me any different than I already was. Then my parents got an under-the-bed drawer for me.

Oh Blackcat, I'm so sorry your family can't recognize why you might find the deep pressure of sleeping under a mattress relaxing and why sitting in a closet would be comforting.
I used to hide inside the dryer.
Your mom doesn't sound the type to read Emergence: labelled Autistic by Temple Grandin which explains why so many autistic people crave deep pressure they can control. And your grandparents inspire violent thinking in me. How could they be so.... so.... And then I think, OK, they've got mental rigidity. Were they yelled at like that when they were kids? Were they bullied as kids? Maybe once they learned how to be safe they started acting like their oppressors.
Makes me want to take you in and give you all the mattresses you need. I wish I could hug you. |
