I just helped a friend set up an $180 he got at a yard sale. Came with a 1.3Ghz AMD Duron Processor, 30GB+10GB Hard Drive and Vista Ultimate. I thought i will be sitting thourgh long boot times and slow as molasses performence like everyone else complains about on thier duo cores w/ 2gb ram. However it booted even faster than with XP. I was able to watch DVD's and Youtube while running updates even after NIS 2008 was installed along with having serveral windows open. Didn't Hiccup and Vomit once and this rig is 6 Years Old.

Apparently the previous owner used the compuer to play Counter-Strike. So once and for all quit the B.S.

well, there's still a lot unsaid. If you run Vista with all the bells and whistles, yeah, it could get pokey. If you turn off a lot of the 'bs' that's built in to the system, it could be. Now, the real test would be to boot it up, and run some hefty programs (hint; any memory hog of a program like MS makes...Wink

But it would be good news if you're right.

I've ran Vista on 256MB Ram before, a bit sluggish but it worked, not as speedy as XP though. Then again if you run XP with 128MB ram apposed to 256MB it'll lag a bit.

booting is not the problem with vista, its when you try to run stuff like WOW,
turning off the bells and whistles helps.

Youtube and DVDs run fine on almost anything
out there.

I didn't realize that vista would run on a processor that slow. Anyhow, my XP system with a similar speed processor boots up in about 30 seconds which includes about 10 seconds for the BIOS. When in hibernate mode, it only takes 20 seconds.

However, on a brand new laptop that came with vista (and literally took 30 minutes to copy a 700 MB file from a flash drive) ran twice as fast when we reformatted it and installed XP. The problem with doing that is that it was really hard finding the XP drivers.

PS: When I say "boot up" above, I am referring to the ready to use state when the HDD stops thrashing and not simply the main screen.

I prefer Linux Mint, although it's an Ubuntu based distro. Ubuntu's based on Debian anyway.

Oh nice, I think I might try Mint out on one of the extra comps I got just laying around. I just wish Microsoft's World Wide Telescope was compatible with Linux, and with "Microsoft" in the name thats pretty much impossible.

In general Ubuntu isn't the type of Linux you should be using.. Well I suppose if you're a noob with Linux or in general dislike Microsoft just because they're Microsoft and have no ability to use other Linux distros then maybe you should use it. But I personally find it to be currently not the best distro, and I will admit it's better than SuSE but try normal Debian or Fedora or something in that genre. I actually liked the 7.10 release of Ubuntu somewhat but the 8.04 wasn't very good at all, and had horrible driver support.
