It will be another 5 billion years before our sun runs out of hydrogen and begins to expand into a red giant star. It will most likely vaporize the earth at that time. And even if it doesn't all life on earth will be burned away. Our sun is not going to last 50 billion years. M-class stars simply don't last that long.

If you read the New Testament, the followers of Jesus were so certain that he was coming back any day that they sold their property and pooled their money to live in a commune in Jerusalem.

Didn't Jesus say something like "Those here today will live to see the Kingdom"?

Yes. On the Big Day they will be resurected to life.

In the event that the world does end soon, I hope that it is at least in 2013 rather 2012 so that all of the tools that wasted money on those books get screwed and the minority that took the 'other year' seriously come out ahead.

But on a serious note, I'm actually tempted to buy a copy of The Complete Idiots Guide to 2012 (yes this book actually exists), think of much a collectors item it will be in 40 years!

stonecold, as has been discussed, in about a billion years the sun, our wonderful, good-ol run-of-the-mill-star, will, after gradually getting hotter and hotter, will reach a temp that will finally do the earth in. the surface water will be gone, and the earth's surface scorched, all life destroyed.

then after about 4 billion additional years, when the sun is about 9.5 billion years old, it will go nova. you are correct in the lack of mass to be a supernova statement. the inner planets will be engulfed in our star's last grasp at life. when it shrinks down to a white dwarf from the red giant stage, the earth will be unrecognizable. burned beyond comprehension.

actually, 2012 looks pretty good.

We keep on burying people that have consumed a lot of preservatives, and this is doing wonders for the world's shelf life.

The muslims have a very different mindset than the communists did.

There is no reason to assume that the world will end at any specific moment just because a bunch of loons predicted it.

All we can really count on is what we know and what we can predict based on the facts. The facts show that we are in are very turbulent segment of human history. The typical period lengths of the mondial social and politico/economic system are getting shorter, which is a sure mark of impending chaos.
The number of crises and conflicts and their frequency of occurrence all over the world is on the rise.

There is likely to be a system crash and ensuing phase change somewhere up ahead. But we know neither the day nor the hour because its inherent in chaos theory that you can not predict that. It could be a year, it could be a hundred years.

Some will say that the world has never ended before. But what is different this time is that it is the first time we have a chaotic phase combined with the ability to destroy our world.
There has never been a chaotic phase in the past when we had the ability to do that.

I believe humanity is in very dire need of a completely new social paradigm. We have to learn to abolish the genetically determined principles of survival of the fittest before they abolish us.
High technology can not coexist with greed and lovelessness. The world, indeed the whole solar system will never be big enough for that.

There is still time. But we have to be quick.

There is also hope. Because if we truly learn to coexist without greed we can, perhaps paradoxically become richer than ever before.
If we reduce our hatred cause frictions and our greed-caused inequalities, even our present technology and resources could give every human an acceptable standard of living.

The Fifth Sun will end right on time, and the Sixth will start the next day, One Reed One Reed.

A Sun is Five Long Counts. Each Long Count is 100 52 year cycles.

The only question is, what event happens every 26,000 years?

Sorry. I meant 5 billion. I was typing on my Kindle e-reader's browser so I make more typos than usual.

Personally, I hope that the world does end in 2012, or at least that humankind is eradicated. I fear most that the world won't end! Let's face it, humanity is a failed experiment that should have been terminated long, long ago. (And yes, I am serious.)

That is one precession cycle of the earth's axis.

I know I am going to die in the next couple of decades.

I might die alone of a heart attack or I might die because half the population is wiped out by a plague.

Or I might die because the sun explodes and kills all of us.

It doesn't really matter, does it?

I am still going to die and so are you.
