Wow--just finished reading the whole thing. That was one of the best stories I've ever read.
The backstory is very believable and you incorporated it into the canon events of the series very well. Nice!
Just one thing (maybe I missed this)--at one point, Derpy says she knows what her cutie mark means, but that was never brought up again. Was that left up to the readers to decide, or is it the rainbows/"spectrum" (very nice ) that appear on bubbles' surfaces?
This would make a great episode. If nothing else, it should be a storybook that parents could read to their kids. There are many who could learn a lot from reading this.

I guess I never did say what it was supposed...I meant for it to be symobollic of her destiny to become obssessed with aerodynamics, or being exceptionally well at observing things as they move through the air, or something along those lines. I just got back from handing it in. 10% in extra credit for turning it in early, yay! I'm usually paranoid about others reading my stuff, but I feel happy right now, so I'm just going to put the Google docs link here for anyone who wants to read it. Just read the entire essay--very good job! I think that it would make an excellent publicity article for the show.
In response to what Justin Lujan said about it helping him through some rough times: it always makes me feel better when I've had a bad/tough day also (I often watch episodes at night before going to sleep).
Also, "Smile, Smile, Smile" has helped me get through particularly trying days at work (yes, I've pretty much memorized it by now).

I'm just a casual Pegasister. I watch the show occasionally, I don't collect any merchandise, or buy the DVDs, or much. Sometimes I draw ponies for fun.
As for my favorite characters, they are Gilda the Griffon (Love that hateful girl. XD), Discord the Draconequus (Spelled that right?) and, to an extent, Twilight Sparkle. In that order. I actually don't really like most of the Mane 6, especially Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy. Man they're annoying.
