I'm at that transition stage between being completely mediocre and kicking ass
I only stopped right now because I'm exhausted
Not too long ago I was struggling with learning my favorite Iron Maiden songs, and the ones I did manage like The Trooper were sloppy as hell
Tonight I picked up my guitar, warmed up with some Black Sabbath, and tore a bunch of songs apart with a short improvised solo at the end of NIB that was cut short as my brain caught up and went "What the hell are you doing, you don't know how to do this" which it has a bad habit of doing just as I'm getting into things
My guitar is in bad condition though, sad to say it's neglect on my part |

I don't play the guitar, but here's a little something that reminded me of this thread!

I play guitar too. Been at it about... 7 or 8 years. I have played a few shows during high school and after when I became somewhat involved in the local jam scene. I play a lot of different styles and have mastered most techniques. I lost interest in playing live though, not for lack of confidence, but mostly because I really just play for myself and my own entertainment/stress relief. A lot of people try to convince me to get back into it but I doubt that will happen any time soon. _________________ Opportunities multiply as they are seized. -Sun Tzu

That Goulding guitar kind of reminds me of a cross between a Zemaitis and a Veleno. It would be interesting to see one that had an aluminum fretboard as well, instead of using cocobolo. --I can definately hear the immediate attack that the aluminum provides the playing with and it would definately be more pronounced with an aluminum fretboard. _________________ "When there's no 'there' to get to, we're so there!" |

I've been playing for over twelve years now...took up bass a year ago and started a home recording project last week. My current rig has now found a use in the 'RPM Challenge' - an amateur online project that encourages people to write, record and burn to CD ten songs or 35 minutes of music. I'm a complete beginner with the recording thing - I've played in a pub band and I've been slowly building up a collection of gear to use - but the past few days have given me the impetus to do something useful with it.
I've had a couple of acoustics that I didn't like very much, a Squier 'bullet' cheap Strat that I still have today (my first guitar, so can't bear to part with it), an Ibanez AR-100 that dates back to the end of the 70s, and my personal fave: a Japanese-made Fender Jazzmaster. It's taken awhile but I've finally found a guitar that feels and sounds *right* for me.
Hopefully I'll be able to post up the tracks when they're done...after giving myself a crash course in using recording software I now have less than three weeks to finish the eight more songs! |

| Anyone, by chance, play fretless guitar? I have a project lined up to convert an old discard guitar I own into a fretless variety, but I don't have the materials yet. |

I've tried one before but I didn't get to play it very long. Interesting feel. I also think scalloped frets are pretty cool _________________ Opportunities multiply as they are seized. -Sun Tzu

Wishful thinking: (Link)
...I once had a G&L Legacy with blueburst finish just like that one... only mine had frets. |

I've played for about 10 years, although I played bass for years before that, so I wasn't starting out knowing nothing. Use heavily dropped 2.5 years ago when I started Piano, and pretty much vanished when I bought my synth a year ago. I'm good at playing guitar, I just find the instrument small for my hands, and heavily overused. Knowing how to play one makes it easier for me to write for them, but I don't find them very useful. The vast majority of guitar players I encounter are pretty bad, too.
I just like piano/synth and bass too much to justify spending time on guitar. I still play at least 30 minutes a week like I do all the instruments I own, just to ensure I don't get -totally- rusty on it, and to ensure the instrument remains in good condition with everything properly adjusted. Doesn't get hours of play daily like my fretless basses, synth, and melodica do though. |

If you ever get the chance to play an old Bond guitar you might like it. Check out the info here, as they had a very interesting stepped aluminum fretboard design to go long with graphite/ Carbon composite construction.

I remember trying one out in the 80's, and seem to recall that Edge used one to record 'Bullet The Blue Sky' on U2's Joshua Tree release _________________ "When there's no 'there' to get to, we're so there!" |

I'm actually swinging by the guitar shop later today. I wonder what the odds are they'll have a fretless or a microtonal guitar I can play with.
I'm visiting my future guitar -- can't afford it yet, but it shall be mine in due time (this model) |
