I wish I could block out noise. I can only tune out people when they are speaking to me. _________________ I see your lips moving, but all I hear is, oh, look!!! A cat... |

My hearing fluctuates around the level which is considered mild hearing loss, some frequencies by up to 30dB. This is partly due to issues with congestion which means my eustachian tubes get blocked up. The congestion is a side-effect of one of my meds along with hayfever, I get some good from antihistamines but it can still be a problem. The audiologist I saw said the problems I have are worse than my audiogram would suggest so it's not just my ears. He also said the bipolar and the meds I take from it which affect my concentration make comprehension more difficult and I think I may have some issues with central auditory processing but this hasn't been tested. Several small problems combined make it harder to deal with because there's no one solution.
When I was a kid I had loads of ear infections, one was so severe that my eardrum ruptured and I was profoundly deaf for a day which was terrifying - I woke up one morning and couldn't hear anything and didn't know if I ever would again. My hearing did come back and apparently my eardrum is no longer scarred so there's no long-term physical problem there but I wasn't taking antipsychotics then so one problem has been replaced with another. I love DVDs so much because they usually have subtitles so I don't have to miss anything - I was in my 20s before I found out the correct words to some of the Disney films I watched on VHS as a child. My dad wouldn't allow me to have subtitles on the TV at home because apparently it was bad for me to "rely on them", an unusual benefit of having my own place is I can use subtitles all I want without being yelled at. |

I hate when people don't want to repeat what they said |
Oh my gosh! This happens to me as well; everything you just mentioned. |

| I have Tinnitus, which is really annoying when I'm trying to get to sleep at night! Also recently my mum told me that I had '75% hearing'- not quite sure what that's supposed to mean, but she did say she contemplated getting me a hearing aid. My younger half-brother who has been diagnosed ADHD and I think too has Asperger's is deaf in one ear. |

I have some minor hearing loss from being a musician. I almost always use hearing protection when there are high sound levels, but occasionally I've gone without due to not being able to hear myself properly (you really need to hear yourself well when singing, or playing fretless instruments, and especially doing both together), etc. I do a pretty decent amount of live playing at bars and such (3-4x a month most months), and I often go without hearing protection for those, just to make sure I hear myself well and perform well.
Other than that very minor hearing loss, the only other hearing problem I have comes from sensory processing disorder. Mostly manifests in not being able to keep track of one person talking when many are, etc. |
