It's because the parents and/or older siblings probably talk like that around little kids.  He's probably just reached the age where he knows certain things he hears other older people saying are rude/nasty and he's testing them out. It's fairly innocent child behavior on his part but the older people who inadvertently taught him to talk like that are idiots.
I don't think hitting solves anything but my parents at least threatened to wash my mouth out with soap. I don't recall them following through on that but I did get locked in my room and had certain toys taken away. But then even if a kid is punished he's still going to mimic the way people around him talk when the parents aren't around. The problem is a culture where people think it's fine to talk trash around small children and teach them to act like little delinquents. |

Yeah, children these days are crazy. Working in the child care field I have come across many little brats. I have nothing against spanking either if a child is majorly misbehaving. Just spanking though, nothing else. Obviously I don't spank children at work. We used positive reinforcement, redirecting and authoritative guidance. Parents these days overindulge their children and/or don't give them enough attention. They buy them cell phones, video games and iPods but when it comes to sitting down with your child and getting to really know them or interacting with them they can't because they've had a busy day and don't want to deal with the child. A lot of parents do stuff for their children that the child should be perfectly capable of doing themselves and should be learning on their own. Kindergarten in Ontario now is available for children as young as 3 years old which is good but not if your child doesn't know how to put on their own clothes or go to the washroom by themselves. A lot of television shows don't help either, they're loud, colorful, hyper shows that make children bounce off of the walls like they just ate a bowl full of sugar. What happened to quality children's television programming?
Blah, sorry I ranted a little bit too much. Working in the child care field I see a lot of things that bug me though. |

They might talk like that around their peers but parents should be teaching their children to have respect and not to run around and call people names. I knew better than to do that at that age. I also knew better not to swear at that age even around my friends. Mind you, if this child was 5 years old and running wild on his own I'm sure his parents aren't really teaching him much of anything. I do feel sorry for troubled children because they don't get the love, attention and guidance they need from their family. |

I think we should go back to the rules of the 1800's. This was actually rules taken from a North Carolina school in the 1800's.

Wow. There are still schools today that hit students and only 19 states allow it. None of my schools did hitting but my parents schools did when they were kids. I think my dad was hit once by the principal and he told me the time he saw another boy walking down the stairs crying holding his butt because the principal had hit him. I thought they all stopped in the 1970's but my parents were wrong but my mother meant public school and there are public schools out there that still hit. But they all call home first before hitting the student. I also think parents can sign the slip saying they don't want their child getting that punishment.
BTW some of those rules don't seem punish worthy and some of them are just silly. |

I think if those were the rules I had as a kid I would still have welts from all the lashings I would have gotten....that's a lot to remember, and some of it is simply ridiculous.

Yeah there are a lot of sexist rules in there as well. Wow, I had no idea that 19 states still allow hitting in schools. |

Kind of off topic but I was reading that book Ozzy wrote, and he was talking about some teacher repeatedly beating him with a shoe, until he took matters into his own hands....I found it rather entertaining.

There are some sexist rules in the schools here. Boys have to have short hair, boys have to wear belts and tuck in their shirts, boys can't wear earrings, boys can't dye their hair, girls can't dye their hair "unnatural colors" (which isn't sexist, it's just stupid) and another stupid rule is that you can't wear tongue piercig jewelry at school.
They still spank kids here. They have a paddle to do it with. The parent gets the choices of either saying paddle them when you want to and dont call me, paddle them but call me first, paddle them but I have to be there, or don't paddle them at all and give them detention or suspension instead. My boys always got me to say just paddle them and get it over with instead of dealing with ISD or suspension. My girls have never been paddled and they didn't want me to say they could be, so I didn't. They were only in trouble about once or twice each, ever. The oldest got in trouble for skipping once, and once for bringing an ibuprofin to school for cramps that I had put in a bottle for her in her purse. The younger one got in trouble once for fighting and in first grade for bullying. She was the smallest and most delicate kid in her class and would be so sweet around grownups like butter wouldn't melt in her mouth, but she would just go up to the other kids, bigger kids than her, and push them down or take their stuff! The teacher called me in and said "she's the youngest in a big family, isn't she?" She said that was pretty common behavior for the youngest in a big family lol. We had a talk with her about that and she stopped it.

It seems that with the way we deal with children being such a sensitive, contentious issue, it can easily go too far one way or too far the other and we can be either too lax or too harsh. I know you said you wouldn't want to go as far as lashing. But although I don't know if I'd been brought up with the more barbarous social code and social expectations of the 1800's I might have a different opinion, the idea of corporal punishment of children is absolutely wlatsome and is something I can't condone. This is coming from someone who has often posted on WrongPlanet about how much of an aversion I have to children, and how much I stay out of children's way at all costs. I don't think I was ever corporally punished at school, as corporal punishment must have been banned in schools here before I started school. But I experienced corporal punishment at the hands of my parents. At the age of 10 I was ordered by my mother to strip nude and lie on the bed, while she gave me 20 flogs as hard as she physically could (i.e. not so much a smacking as a ritual flogging designed as maximum humiliation) on my naked body. I was expected to believe that this was apparently an appropriate parental response to somehow allowing myself to be a bullying target at school.
On the other hand, I have continued to often experience jarring, traumatic experiences going through adulthood. And these seem to have almost always related to children (i.e. misplaced paedophile hysteria and the threatened or actual violence that for me has come with it) and the free rein they are allowed in society (i.e. experiencing extensive antisocial behaviour at addresses I've lived). However as difficult as all this has been for a chronically single adult male like me, the level of care taken on child protection shows that we are advanced and civilised in our society such that we disallow at all costs children to come to harm. It's a very civilised thing that society is dead against corporal punishment or other physical exploitation of children. |

Really "hitting" as punishment for doing something wrong, kinda speaks the "mindset of the parent". Maybe should start slapping anyone who says that with a "large fish" until they learn proper techniques that don't require "smacking". I never got hit.
& I am not one of these kids.
& technically would "lashing" "smacking" "hitting" work these days, it is used in you know what acts.
