I noticed that objectively it's impossible to for me to know how to rank them. I ranked them LJ,MM,RH,SN on the assumption that RH and LJ were not justly imprisoned, or if they were it was for neutral or easily forgivable offense. If RH was in fact a violent criminal then I can't as easily see the story in a romantic light. MM freeing RH could have been done out of selfish infatuation rather than genuine love. On the other hand, if it was really unconditional love for a flawed person who possibly committed a reprehensible act I don't think she would have abandoned him so quickly for words said in a brief fit of jealousy. SN is really the only unambiguously slimy character. All the others require more information to judge, but could be even worse depending on the untold back-story.

Based solely on the details in the short story with no preconceptions about any of the characters:

Maid Marion - gave up her body for the love of her man (and, OK, because she wanted to get out of jail too).

Little John - basically an opportunist full of unproven promises, but at least he made Maid Marion feel good and didn't do anything bad.

The Sheriff - A loyal public servant out doing his job, but fundamentally flawed as he was easily seduced.

Robin Hood - Woman-beating criminal. No redeeming qualities.

Except that the sheriff wasn't 'seduced.' He used his position to manipulate Marian into sex- sexual harassment at the least, and rape according to most definitions.

The Robin Hood Morality Test
mjsr
Morale and Honest
(Best)
Maid Marion
Little John
The Sheriff
Robin Hood
(Worst)
Immoral and Dishonest

Interpretation

You are essentially a contented person, even if you consider yourself a little superior. You are moral by your own standards, for you believe that morality is what best suits the occasion.

Men: You are sexually uninhibited, more romantic than you may appear, and more dependent on the approval of others than you care to admit.

MM - Willing to do unspeakable sacrifices to free people.
LJ - From the material thus far, doesn't seem overly assholic.
SN - Pretty slimy public official willing to leverage position for sexual flavours.
RH - Abusive as f*ck and unsympathetic in tricky situations. Entitlement issues.

According to the test your results indicate a hint of idealism.

That's all the evidence I need. This test's explanatory power is utter bullsh*t.

OK, I glossed over who initiated the sexual pact. I was thinking it was Maid Marion when I typed my response ... so my analysis is slightly off. Still doesn't change The Sheriff's positon as #3 of 4.

MM, LJ, RH, TS

It's really a toss-up who's worse between RH and TS, though, and LJ doesn't enter in enough to judge if he's better than MM.

My choice wasn't on the test:

"Alan Rickman + who gives a f**k about those other people?"

You are fairly broadminded romantic and reasonably contented. You value kindness greatly and try to live by your ideals. You do not conceal from yourself, or from others, your strong need for security, which may be either emotional or material.

Men: Perhaps you tend to idealize women and credit them with virtues they don't possess.

That is kinda accurate hmm strange though I am not always like that at all close enough for me though Cool

We would expect you to be a happy, well-balanced person who likes people and is liked by others. You question whether many conventional views on morality are valid under all circumstances.

Women: You will expect high standards from the men to whom you give your love.

You would expect that...but I'm the most cynical person I've ever met.

I picked: MM, LJ, RH, TS

Because Maid Marion tried to help people at the highest cost, she's first. Little John also tried to help, but at lest risk. Robin is a jackass. The Sheriff is a dick who thinks with his dick. =P
