What the hell does that have to do with anything?
And I've heard stories about what happens to people who don't fit in in Japan. They may not be hyper social, but you still have to follow neurotypical norms, right? And forget dealing with being mentally ill and successful.
I haven't been there, and I know you have, but I understand some things about their culture, and it would be tough not to be able to match social cues.

IdahoRose - From what I've heard (and I could be wrong), in Japan mental illnesses are thought to be the parent's/family's problem/responsibility, not society's, so many mentally ill Japanese people do not seek professional help out of fear of embarrassing their families. It's probably a big contributing factor to the hikikomori (basically extreme recluses) problem, as well as the aforementioned skyrocketing suicide rates.
Problem is that the family doesn't do anything about it. So they're willing to wait until it's too late. When I mean too late, I mean the person commits suicide. Because people with mental illnesses are expected to endure it and suffer for their families, and enjoy being miserable. If they can't stand it anymore, they commit suicide. It's as if they want people to die, but they don't tell you about it.
The real question I should ask is how well are the psychological/mental health services in Japan for depression?
The sad truth is that there is little information I know of about Asperger's in Japan or in East Asian countries.

Well it exists, and therefore should be discussed. _________________ It's like alice in wonderland except, my names not alice and this is the real world not a dream.
Back in the Feudal days, their "police" force committed suicide over practically...anything if it broke honor (and did it with a smile); there was a big list of "honorable ways" too.
"Culture", or perhaps something in the seafood. Note that Japan has the highest incidence of autism in the world. _________________ Just a simple man trying to survive (who's asocial and doesn't accept PMs).

Some aspies in Japan make it fine but most fold under pressure and become Hikikomori. A large portion of Hikikomori are on the spectrum but it can happen to NTs as well.

This does open my eyes. I am of Korean origin, and am grateful to have been raised in North America.... or else I would not have my upbeat attitude that has kept me going all these years. _________________ Good day, Los Angeles......

Indeed. The reason Japan's suicide rate is so high is because Japanese culture has historically considered suicide an honorable way to atone for one's failures, whereas most of the rest of the world views suicide as a dishonorable death; the path taken by someone refusing to atone for one's failures.

I believe that the culture itself, with it's history of serious honour, is the reason for such high suicide rates. Not the having of a mental illness. The honour and hard working side of the culture is what is creating the depression that causes so many to "reclaim their honour through death". It's a very tricky thing to discuss about without being incredibly indepth. So much to take into account.
On a plus side, living in a nice, quiet little village/town, as opposed to tokyo or something, would be fantastic to me!! I had a dream of being a yamabushi (mountain warrior/priest) the other night. I didn't want to wake up!! :')
