I disagree, Hyperlexian. I don't think that makes any sense. See, this site apparently gives users the option whether they would want to be e-mailed or not, but then its so-called "Terms of Service" completely contradicts said option.

Kind of reminds me of hypocrites who enforce laws yet disobey same laws themselves.

i guess he wasn't really giving people the option. according to his Terms of Service, he doesn't have to respect your decision to opt out. as a member you agreed to his terms because it's his sandbox. you can set your email to put his emails into the spam folder, which is your option in this case.

That, in my book, is misleading and deceptive. I'd suggest Plank and his henchmen better watch out about it.

It is his site, and as such, he can do whatever he wants with it. Don't like it, leave.

I checked no to the newsletter and got the email also. So? It's one email. It's simple to hit delete. If somebody wants to go on a tangent about Alex and his "henchmen" (I had no idea programmers could ever be considered to be something as tough as henchmen) and dislikes him so much then I have to ask why that person continues to use the site that belongs to Alex?

I'm not saying you have to like him to be here, or can't be here if you dislike him, but if you dislike him that much why would you even want to come on his site?

Problem with that is, even if you are no longer an active WP user you will still get unsolicited emails from wrongplanet.

edit: heard from a banned member that they also got the notification. alex must have used a database of all email addresses from every member who ever signed up.

well SOME people read the terms of service, but it seems to be uncommon.
Girls just wanna have fun! I never read the TOS for any site.
I suspect that if people actually did and they were inforced strickly nobody would be able to use the internet. Laughing

The email is advertising an article that is irrelevant to a large (most probably majority) of the people it was sent to. Most of the other articles have more relevance to the general membership of the board.

I was surprised at the message, especially as (in the UK) Mothers' Day had passed months ago (List of dates).

^^^^ yeah i was surprised. i was also glad because i DID sign up for newsletters and i have been waiting for one for a long time. but i am not glad that it got sent to banned members or members who would prefer not to get the newletters. although it is fully within alex's rights to send it, i can understand people being irked by it.

Terms of service or not, it is generally considered bad practice to spam members (of any site) without giving them the option to either refuse such emails in their profile or provide an unsubscribe option with the spam email. All other sites I'm a member of have options in the profile (that work!) regarding this. If this was a one-off trial by Alex then no biggy; but if such spams start becoming frequent he will likely stir up a lot more complaints.

In addition, sending the spam to banned members is stupid and provocative to say the least! It is a no-brainer to filter out such email addresses from the "mailing" list. A simple SQL statement taking a few seconds to type in should be all that is required. I guess that was too much trouble, like fixing all the other site problems.

What happens if you email this address?

anonymous@wrongplanet.sliqua.com

I agree, with most other spam I get there is usually an unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email itself, but it appears this one has no similar option.

Oh and Alex doesn't have "Henchman", he has Oompa Loompas, thank you very much.
