I don't think it's a mini stroke. I've had this happen multiple times, and it always takes a similar course, even if of different durations.

Able to speak more today than yesterday.

Got it mostly back now. I think it was coming back before I realized it was, as I was speaking - it was simply very difficult and couldn't do it often.

Sounds like, if there were a such thing, like Verbal Apraxia......

Something tells me, as the Autism population ages, this might become a more frequent occurrence.

Adult Apraxia of speech....possibly.

Interesting.

*opinions and should be taken as such...

. . . I think what triggered it was a combination of things: It was getting hotter here, and heat and I do not get along. My sister and niece were arguing very loudly and daily for two or three days before the shutdown. My niece's baby cries very frequently, and when she cries that sometimes leaves me discombobulated and a bit dissociated due to the volume and duration. There was also a lot of door slamming, and the dogs (three small dogs in the house) were barking fairly frequently. I had also been playing a lot of Diablo III over the weeks previous, and had kept playing past the point where it was overloading me the day before, and nearly had a meltdown because I couldn't do anything right due to the overload. . .

Wow, that's a siege. And that's enough to cause anyone a serious stress reaction. Where family members have these kind of long protracted arguments, with no end in sight, I mean in the midst of it there's not a guaranteed conclusion date, that is a poisonous environment.

I think it's entirely normal to use whatever stress relief, such as Diablo III (video game?), one can find. The only thing I might add is, maybe multiple sources of stress relief? Such as a really good book you're reading at the same time or working out at a local gym or practicing tennis against a backboard, also an excuse to get out of the house. Of course all this, depending on the circumstances, can be easier said than done.

Is your sister the kind of person you can have a brief, mature discussion with? And she might not be. Please trust your gut instincts regarding this.

The problem is that both my sister and niece are impulsive about their anger, so they just explode. My niece is definitely diagnosed with bipolar along with ADHD, and my sister is diagnosed with ADHD but nothing else and refuses to believe that her behavior causes trouble for anyone. She insists that anything that happens is always someone else's fault.

TheSunAlsoRises,

I believe verbal apraxia is an actual thing:

Unless you meant something different from that description?

I talked to my mother and she said I did this all the time as a child, usually when under a lot of stress. I couldn't remember for sure either way, but good to know.

I'm glad you got some verification....THAT it's nothing new.

Yeah. My issue with describing shutdowns in the past is that I interpreted many of them as a variety of different things. Since they're already categorized differently, I can't just automatically link them all together without prompting.

As far as childhood goes, my recollections give me the impression that I was pretty oblivious to a lot of things around me and didn't note a lot of things that happened as unusual because I didn't think I was different from others (although I couldn't explain why people would hate and harass and bully me). I remember a lot of specifics going back to a year old, but the memories fit into categories that usually do not mention autism because I've only started using autism as a lens to view my own history.

As far as speech loss goes, it's not new now - it's happened in adulthood multiple times, and I really started to pay attention about a year and a half ago, as it happened while I was talking to Pensieve about whether I was autistic or not.
