The Levitical priest diet of all-you-can-eat well-done steak, lamb, and goat sounds tempting but I'd probably decline it for similar reasons. No drug-eluting stents or statins back in those days. Just reading Numbers made my arteries clench up.

I thought the best diet was always to eat less or at least to a level that matches your metabolism.

1. Eat less.
2. Exercise more.
3. No excuses.

You also need to live a livestyle you can live with.

I lost over 35 pounds and am keeping it off. I used NutriSystem, which is a gimmick, but what they do is get you used to eating 5-6 times a day in very small portions with foods that aren't half-bad at all. You learn (hopefully) that you can have ANYTHING you want if you discipline yourself in frequency and portion sizes.

When I got to my target, I bought stuff from the store that was nutritious and gave me easy-to-consume, pre-measured portions. I went to using a bread plate (small) for dinners so I have an easy way to limit dinner portions. I can have a whole chicken or a pint of ice cream if I so crave it, but I always think about it before I put it in my basket.

My exercise takes 15-20 minutes at the gym 3 times a week. I know people doing much more and not getting results. The hardest thing was getting used to NOT eating the stuff I used to eat and saving the naughty stuff for rare treats instead of daily indulgences.

One definitely won't find many cookies laying on the ground that's for sure. :)

To reiterate my avatar 'C' does not stand for cabbage, it does not stand for carrots, it does not stand for cilantro - regardless of what any single-payer health system might say to the contrary.

You know I can't take anything you say seriously with the cookie monster voice when I read you posts. :P

Hi all... if anyone still cares, I do know what that organism is... it's called a SCOBY... or Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeasts. Simply put, it's a probiotic generating lifeform that one feeds black tea and sugar to, and it goes to work producing vinegar; it's a vinegar 'Mother', in fact. Pretty kewl really... I haven't tried eating the matrix yet... there are recipes... (don't think I'd try eating placenta either...) I've always loved slime... ever since 'The Blob'... :)

That's interesting...

Is there a correlation between high-crime/high mortality neighborhoods and morbid obesity? Based on your observation here, I'd say their might very well be a causal relationship.

Not to side track too much, but low income/high crime neighborhoods tend to be in "food deserts," which leads to eating cheap high-calorie/low nutritional value garbage.
