Yeah, woman-specific advice would be useful  I have negative fashion sense. If there's such a thing as the inverse of fashion I'm it... Reading the site now with great interest. |

I'm good on all counts except wearing glasses sometimes and my wallet chain. The thing is, I lost my wallet twice in a one month period when I didn't have a chain and now I'm afraid to get rid of it. Sometimes my friends point it out to me but whever, I'm still young, I can get away with it. And everyone always tells me I look better with glasses so that's usually the only reason I wear them. This site seems like an individuality crusher, but then again so is culture.  |

I try and dress appropriately for a job interview and when I am meeting my parents.Other then that, my current style is ala bag lady.Previous to that it was Death rocker,gutter punk and head banger(very misguided few years of high school)I picked my boyfriend because he doesnt care and wears mostly PJs at home since we have been together.I prefer it.Maybe if I had to go looking for a mate I would make some SMALL alterations but I dont believe in false advertising so I dont flaunt what I am not giving away.(I tried that and got some attention but not the kind I wanted or from the guys I wanted.)
I think the "way to dress" is something that attracts the kind of person you are and want to attract.Why dress like some financially wealthy and materialistic,super friendly NT, if that is not what the person is going to be getting.I would hate to dress like a bear if I am a Deer(How would other deers find me and wouldnt the bears I attracted be more likely to eat me?)So thanks for the advice but NO Thanks.
And Shale....I find it sad that your son embarrasses you,sounds like you may have some boundary issues?I dont think parents self image should be effected by their children's appearance.It was one factor in destroying my relationship with my mother.She was embarrassed by me and I was resentful of her not being able to separate her sense of "self" from me.(I didnt tell her how to dress even though I thought her polyester power suits looked like crap to me.)I was also mature enough not to be embarrassed by her, because I could tell her appearance was not a direct reflection on me and I had a separate identity....just food for thought.I hope your son is not embarrassed by your flaunting and enticing men with your cleavage,some children are very confused by their own parents "embracing their sexuality".

My kids sure think they are. When they were growing up, it embarassed them when they were out with me some where and I was wearing sweat pants. I think sweat pants are cool. |

Oh, I forgot, I also wear plaid and flannel from time to time. But here's the deal with that.
Look, I'm sure even you guys are going to think that I'm some kind of super nerd by the time that you finish this paragraph, and people always roll their eyes at me when I tell them this, but I don't wear flannel overshirts out of ignorance of fashion or apathy. And I won't wear just any flannel overshirt, I have to pick one that compliments my personality and appearance, usually blue, always plaid, and just the right texture. When I find one that matches me, we're like best pals. I feel like I'm making a fashion statement by wearing it, because it's my shirt, I took care of it, and it's a part of me. And people always go, "man, why do you always wear that lumberjack shirt?" I feel like a tool dressing in nice clothes. I've found a sort of happy medium right now, but whenever I'm at school I can't help but looking at people and thinking
tool, tool, he's a tool, he's a major tool" etc. |

I dress sort of like Booger from revenger of the nerds
In the summer I go commando (no undies) gotta let it air out down there, home made shorts from sweat pants,home made jean shorts, home made tank tops, t-shirts. I tend to wear the same clothing almost everyday, when they get dirty I just turn them inside out. So I probably smell often.
In the winter I wear jeans, sweat shirts, sweat pants, I do wear underwear, mittens when it cold out, a snow hat. I also wear the same thing over and over. I have been wearing the same pair of socks for over 3 weeks now. My boxers I change when the skid marks are noticeable. My clothing I change when the food, beer, and other stains become way to noticeable to people. |

Son? Oh, in reference to boy. No, that would be boyfriend, as in partner  I'm only 20 myself. My boyFRIEND dresses in a way that's...erm...a bit too casual for pretty much everywhere except the arcade He's even grown too tall for his dirty old shorts! I mean come on, he wears the clothes he works on cars with down the street while I at least make an effort!  I don't really fancy going out to dinner with someone whose clothes are covered in engine grease, are a few sizes too small and are otherwise inappropriate for anything other than McDonalds. He's lucky he's drop dead gorgeous |

If you wanna wear a banana-hammock, more power to you. Just be aware that there is a 99.9% chance they are actually laughing AT you rather than enjoying the view...general concensus amongst us girls is that speedos are nasty, nasty things to inflict on us Alright if you're an olympic swimmer, but unless you are tanned, muscly and hairless, speedos are baaaad news.

I believe in these 5 rules:
1. No long hair
2. No facial hair, especially nose and ear hair
3. Make sure nails are trimmed and clean. No ear wax
4. No cologne
5. Bathe regularly (I can't believe we have to say this)
The rest of it is probably good general advice for those who are completely clueless, but please don't treat them as The Rules. Basically, I think anyone can pull anything off if it suits their personality and they are confident about it. I've probably broken every fashion rule in the book, and made up some more, and then broken them. I love the way I dress; its very fun and freeing to just do what i want without much regard to what others think. The result, ironically, is that I tend to get a lot of compliments on my style. Somehow, I can pull off dressing like a moranic clown stuck in various phases of time travel and strangled in rainbows. But even that is not My Rule. I wear bland-ish sweats and socks with sandals too.
I think in general, have respect for yourself and for others, and be appropriate to the situation. Like, no 3 piece suit to class, and no bathing suit to a wedding. But if you're within the general dress code for a situation, be yourself, and dress the way you feel most confident. As long as you don't smell, girls probably won't care.
Then again, i'm speaking from my experience as an aspie girl. I'm aware that there are some girls out there who actually are attracted to material things like clothes and cars. (strange creatures!!) Myself, I'm attracted visually to bright colors but that has nothing to do with my attraction to the guy wearing them. I'm just as likely to stare at a brightly colored wall as i am at a brightly colored male's shirt. However, I would notice him, which would be an advantage since I usually don't notice people whether or not they're attractive. But again, that's just me.
Oh another thing, I personally prefer a guy who might be dressed like a geek, knowingly or not, than a guy who is trying too hard to fit in. There are already too many people trying to look just like everybody else. It's confusing for people with bad facial recognition, but more importantly, it reveals a low self-esteem, which is not attractive.
So, you can wear anything you want as long as you love the way you look and feel in it. If the clothes compliment your personality and looks, you will feel confident and thus be more attractive, even if you're wearing socks with sandals and a free T-shirt. |

Isn't he then just conforming to all the other geeks? Although I think you're referring to conforming to mainstream culture; it seems like everyone nowadays is dressing like people on MTV (which in my opinion makes you look sorta absurd). Of course everyone's style is influenced at least somewhat by other people. It's hard to come up with original ideas...
Pure fashion involves wearing combinations noone else is wearing. If you've ever see runway shows you'll know what I mean; half the time you wonder what would happen if the runway models actually dressed like that in public. Most likely they'd get some odd looks but at least they wouldn't be clad in MTV garb.

yeah, people can dress however they want, but I really doubt most of the guys who carelessly cut their own hair, wear socks and sandals all the time and really short shorts and broken glasses actually think to themselves when they get dressed "wow i love the way I look." They just put on whatever they find on the floor of their room regardless of how it looks which I think reflects a poor self image actually.
Personally, my wardrobe consists of a unique mix between 1940s retro and 'geek chic'... I seem to be able to find a lot of this stuff at banana republic oddly enough as I think retro is starting to make a comeback in the 25-29 crowd (which banana republic caters to)...
unfortunately, retro is a little on the expensive side unless you buy it used which I don't really like doing...

FYI - Target is starting to carry some more retro clothing. I've bought a few things there that I really like. It might be something to look into given how absolutely ridiculous Banana Republic's prices are. |
