I dunno how much it has to do with "risk taking" and how much it has to do with being "spread the hell out with lousy public transit". I have posted my location, as have others, and even PMed a few people in my general area just to see if they would be interested. It gets old to watch a topic in the hopes that out of 30 postings, one might be directed to someone even on your continent.

Thus the reasoning behind a geographical sorting system for meet-up threads. As I said, I'm not suggesting London/UK meetups not be able to use it, and I even said it's GREAT that people are getting out and doing stuff...I'm just suggesting it would be easier for those of use who don't live in that country to get meet-up postings which are at least somewhat geographically relevant. The odd posting from Jacksonville, Florida or Texas or Iowa kind of gets lost in the London shuffle.

I've also looked on meet-up.com...seems to be mostly kids/parents on there, rather than adult people on the spectrum.

I did find an AS support group for students at my new school, and supposedly, there are about 14 or 15 members.

But you're probably right about most meetups being for parents of kids on the spectrum.

I like the idea, but I think the geographical distribution seems to be fairly extensive. With 20k members though you wouldn't think that Sad Distance is also a huge problem. Texas (where I live) is so huge...takes 6 hours just to get to the next big city!

So, what do you do on Meet Ups anyways? (sounds obvious I know, but figured its easier to ask than to makes guesses)

It's 3 hours from Houston to either Austin or San Antonio.

The only major city in Texas that could be an issue would be El Paso.

lau and I have discussed this. We agree that the forum format is useless for this purpose. We are up against it for the meets thread and others like it. You are never going to please everyone as you can only divide on specific parameters, there is no cross referencing. You can't have a thread stikie for every location, interest group, etc. It doesn't solve the problem of flooding. I was on a forum where there was a separate section for meets it still had the flood problem and still no cross referencing. This echos a similar discussion about the eligible bods, through is the format doesn't support peoples need for choice, and relevance.

What I'm going you do personally, when I have time, is create a system that does just that. Initially it will have a facebook application and would be able to bring up the current meet in you area automatically and you can refine you parameters, and engage in the discussions. It would be fairly interactive. If that goes well, I plan to make a forum add on, and also simple feeds. It would be good to associate with this forum as this is where the community is.

That'd probably work better, yeah.
I'm not so sure about a Facebook thing though as I myself would be wary about putting anything personal up there (or joining groups like this on Facebook since others can see what groups your in and such). It gets back to the whole debate of whether others should know if you've got AS or not Razz

I agree. I'm always nervous that some weirdo patient or his/her family member is going to come off with "I don't want to be taken care of by someone who is HANDICAPPED!!!" Not to mention employers deciding that even though I'm good at what I do, they can't "risk" having me on board. And with facebook/myspace/etc., you never can tell who's going to somehow come across you and pop the little "private view" security setting.

But kudos to lil' kangaroo rat (zero = true) for the effort! Smile I'm sure the facebook idea will work great for a lot of people, just not this one in particular.

Good question this facebook application is more of a front end, one of many possible ones. The reason why I want to make it a facebook application is to test the idea out in an established 'networking' environment. As it happens I'm no expert on networking myself and don't personally use facebook for that reason.

About privacy. I take this seriously and would take care. There isn't necessarily a need to be in or link to fackbook groups. This is going to be a separate application, rather then a facebook group. I haven't planned to manage a facebook group on facebook at all. My aim is for all data given to me that is not already stored by facebook not to be shared with facebook or anyone else without consent. In fact I want the application to be workable with having to necessarily provide any indentfying information.

Just to give a basic idea of how the API works. Facebook can let the application know if a particular application user is logged into facebook. However this does not mean that facebook gives me access to your login or private information, that is not public that you have not agreed to share with me. Likewise if you give me private information I can send the request directly to my server bypassing facebook (not all applications specify this), the data that is retrieved does go through facebook for security reasons. However this data wouldn't necessarily contain indefinable information unless you wanted it to.

However it is prudent to assume that if you haven't been told what is going to happen to your data after giving it to somebody, that it might end up in the public domain, regardless of the ethic/legality involved.

I'd love to meet up! It's so much organising though. It makes my head spin. (And I don't think I can afford it Sad )

Anyway, if there's anyone who wants to meet up in Birmingham (UK), then let me know Smile

Oh, that wasnt a regular thing, just one of the sporadic meetups from the aspievillage.org.uk site.

I havent taken the lead on any meetups myself, but i dont think theres a massive amount of work involved - just name a time (midday?, month or so in advance) & place (near/at train station or easy to find).

Weve always just hung about talking anyway, so i dont think its vital to meticulously plan any activities. Just whatever is free & nearby - museums, cathedrals etc or if the weathers good just somewhere scenic i guess?
