| I was dx'd at age 3 with LFA...I was non-verbal and I didn't play at all with other kids, and when I did play with toys I didn't play with them the right way (apparently there is a right way to play with toys). I started talking at the age of 5, and with lots of occupational therapy and some hard work on my part I slowly became a high functioning autistic adult. I have more in common with autism than Asperger's really...but I'm not sure the original dx in 1985 was the right one...I'm certainly not low functioning at all. I have a career, I own a home, I cook, I clean (most of the time), I drive, I'm getting married.......maybe I'm not autistic at all....although I do still stim, and I'm not great at making eye contact. |

^I went through the same things as well for years before I got an official diagnosis from someone in my family suspecting I had it. To think I wasted my time and my mom's money on these "smart" doctors. _________________ Oh you can't help that. We're all mad here.

Autistic and ADHD.
It is easier to say Aspargers than to try to explain what high functioning autistic is.
non verbal until 4 1/2, and taught myself to read before I turned 3.
Diagnosed at 4 as an Autie + ADHD, my mother refused to have me medicated and was one of the best things she done for me in my childhood. |

I have NLD (like aspergers except I am not good with visual information), but I am proud to be on the spectrum. _________________ A person that does not think he has problems already has one-Me |

A technique that has been over-applied to autism, apparently. There is no evidence that it is any more effective than straightforward support. In fact, there is no evidence that it does much beyond severely stressing the individual it is applied to. Where there have been opportunities to compare the "results" from ABA with the results of not using it, there have been no significant differences.
Its main thesis is that changing undesirable behaviours is a "good idea" and it generally does only that - changes behaviour. It does not address any of the underlying reasons for the behaviour.
One proponent of the technique would be "The Judge Rotenberg Education Center", where they use electroshock of autistics to stop them doing anything they think isn't socially acceptable... e.g. stimming, and so on. |
Thanks for that clarification Lau, I was thinking that some sicko ( ala John Watson ) was forcing mightyzebra and other Autistics to listen to bad Swedish pop music.
On the spectrum here. |

I was diagnosised with LFA (Really really really bad) at 18 months, and I'm actually not sure of the therapy I was in - I didn't/still don't really care about it.
Now I can laugh in those doctor who said that I would have to be sent to an institute because of the severity of my Autism _________________ "You can do the math a thousand way, but you can't undo the past"
