mosh pits don't kill aspies, i've had my fair share of it and always enjoyed it, as for going to concerts stay at the back for a couple of minutes (during the oping bands ) and see if the noise and people around you are irritating, if not proceed at little further, i never irritate myself during concerts even though i dont like noise the fact that i enjoy the music makes it up for me and i'm a whole different person at a gig.

i'm probably going to my first concert in november, to see motorhead.
As for overstimulation i guess it allways depends on who you are to how much you can take

You should enjoy it a lot. Nobody cares if you do jump around and wave your hands at a metal concert, everyone does it. And if you don't like loud noises in the first place, why the hell do you even like metal?
If you like the music, you'll like the show, simple as that Smile

Being a drummer in a metal band, its a given that i love metal, though i think mosh/circle pits are stupid.

I saw Kataklysm when they played down here, i started off in the front row, and ended up 4-6 rows back by the time the first song had finished, because of the stupid circle pit, and i nearly had my nose broken by some Neanderthal douchebag who was juat throwing himself into ANYONE and clearly had no idea what he was doing...

Go to some local metal shows, try out a bit of everything (just in a smaller scale) to see what you can and can't cope with, and then size it up.

I've been to numerous big gigs (Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Mastodon, Opeth, Enter Shikari, Paradise Lost, and more) and not had a problem at any. I go in pits, I'm pretty much always near the front, but I'm one of those people who dooesn't get claustrophobic and I don't freak out if I'm in the crush near the front, I just wait for a song to finish and then move back a bit to where there's more space if it's too cramped. But yeah, everyone's different y'know?
If you're gonna go to a Godsmack show, there WILL be pits, there WILL be crushes, there WILL be morons throwing their weight around. You get douchebags at any gig. Seeing as you can't really hear someone if they politely ask them to dick about, they just throw a punch instead. 90% of people at gigs are there to enjoy themselves, and the moron ALWAYS will get dealt with.

Also, if you go in a pit, 9 times out of 10, people obey the unwritten rules of the pit. If someone goes down, they pick 'em up, if someone doesn't wanna be in the pit anymore, you let em stand to the side and don't push em back in. Of course moshing is violent, but it's nothing personal, it's just a way of using that adrenaline the music gives you, if someone's getting hurt, then the people in the pit know its gone too far.

As much as metal crowds may seem scary, they're there to see the same band as you, and that means everyone in the venue is a friend.
Metal fans have the biggest sense of camraderie I've ever seen, metal crowds are some of the friendliest I've ever been a part of.
There's more to be worried about if you were seeing an indie band to be honest.

Sorry for the essay, but yeah, go, take earplugs, find a spot that suits you, move if it gets uncomfortable, and just don't fret, EVERYONE is there to enjoy themselves with their fellow fans of that band, so you enjoy it too.

I went to see Nightwish a couple of days ago, wore earplugs and hung out right in front of the stage (the speakers were above me so the sound was behind me for the most part) and it went great!

quoted for emphasis

real metal crowds have respect, especially at underages, though once their drunk you've gotta be a bit more careful, every so often there is someone who is there to be an asshole but no more than other gigs
watch out for hardcore/scene kids 9 times out of ten they will not pick you up and at least 5 of those times it will be their fault you where on the ground in the first place

where was i? ... i like about the middle of the crowd to star off with, you dont get as distracted by the people who are still f***ing around at the back, you get a decent view and you get to keep a bit of personal space

but seriously, earplugs and (like should apply to anything) be careful if your by yourself
