255.255.255.255 ...Wink

That's IP v4 (the current standard). At least you can memorize IPs if you have to.

IP v6...is 4 times as long, about 16 groups (if I remember correctly...Wink and it has 'Sagan Numbers' of combinations (billions and billions...Wink

if the US actually used IPv6, the end would be FFFF:FFFF:FFFF:FFFF:FFFF:FFFF:FFFF:FFFF...

I have helped you go...

As much as I use the internet(and it's a lot), I think the net going away would not be such a bad thing.
It has benefits, yes, but it has also become a cultural cesspool that has dissociated millions of people from the rest of the world, while making us that much more Dependant on machines and electronics and so forth instead of each other.

Don't get me wrong, the net is a great learning tool, it helps us meet people we'd never find otherwise, and so on. I don't necessarily want it to go away, but I think it might not be all bad if it did.

I couldnt disagree More. I personally would be helpless to do any sort of meaningful research/communication without the internet. Among OTHER things............Teh.Net is as indispensible as the computer itself. I find it HORRIBLY IRONIC that you as an aspie think dependency on machines is such a bad thing compared to being dependent on other people Mad . People are SELFISH and FAR less reliable than machines! People may not be unpredictable but they sure as Hell are Unreliable and perfidious when it suits their interests to do so. Cyberspace can be customized to be EXACTLY they way you want it. You have FAR more control in the online world than the offline world.

I'm not an aspie, I don't think, but those with it were around long before the internet and somehow survived.
I'm speaking in broader terms than just one demographic, such as those with aspergers. I think it would be better for humanity and our culture, but I do recognize it wouldn't be so good for some individuals or groups within that.

As far as dependency goes, personally I'd rather not be dependent on other people or on a computer, but on myself.

Yes I realize that OBVIOUSLY aspies survived without the internet; which is why we're around today. But once the taste for the.net has been aquired.....it CANNOT be suppressed. How would it be "better" for our culture? Would also be "better for our culture" to get rid of computers all together? What about electricity? AND what about elminating EVERY piece of technology that uses a hydrocarbon fueled internal combustion engine(to eliminate greenhouse gases)??? Rolling Eyes

BTW: as far as dependence goes, being dependent ONLY on oneself is a very nice idea; but its one that is simply NOT feasible in the times we live in. People have TRIED very hard and unless you want to "live off the land" in the wilderness its really not possible. So if you HAVE to depend on something, why not a machine?

So by your logic, once someone tries something they like, they can never put it down?
You've never stopped playing a video game you liked, you've never drifted apart from a friend, you've never gotten over a crush on someone or even stopped liking a given tv show or band?

As far as it being better for our culture - the internet is making us less human every day. It's created an atmosphere in which we never see another face, hear another voice, smell a real smell, nothing. We fire off pseudo-anonymous messages back and forth in a giant unmoderated Wild West where any fantasy can become real and any secret can be learned. It sounds wonderful, but it is making us incapable of relating to one another on basic, human levels.
As far as going without technology for a while, it would make humanity as a whole toughen up, stop bitching, and start experiencing the world around them a little. It might be the downfall of civilization as we know it, but once all was said and done we may end up a little more civil.

You're correct in saying you can't be entirely self-sufficient in an easy way. But that doesn't mean the internet and computers are the only alternative. You are making 'humans are all untrustworthy and bad' a fact of your argument, when this is hardly true. There is a lot of scum out there, but there are plenty of good people too. We're all in this thing together, after all, and in the end we all want the same basic things.

Some day, somehow, things will change...either the system we have will collapse and there will not be an internet, or the internet will change from magical no-holds-barred fantasy land into some sort of oppressive big-brother tool. Either way, we'll find ourselves needing to return to a time when we didn't have it and going from there. I like it, it's a fun toy, tool, and diversion...but it's not a substitute for nature, real people, and all the other experiences you can't get sitting in front of a monitor.

I'm skeptical about this, methinks the tele-com companies are grasping at straws trying to kill Net Neutrality.

god you people and your reminding me of web comics
for JimmyJazz (from dinosaur comics)

for Lavos (from xkcd)

how would they give different traffic different priority? unless they give youtube its own port number i dont understand how it could work
i think there just trying to soften us up for a rates rise

for dependency on the internet, as i see it pritty much everyone is out of touch with reality, and based on that i can only assume they would think the same of me its got nothing to do with the internet.

parts of society continuously ignore what other parts of it consider essential

for example music is a huge part of my life, i dont understand how people only listen to radio trash and take no interest in playing music, but i can (and have) spent a week without going outside not even looking out the windows, which i understand most people would have trouble with

i imagine most apies have realized this, but im avoiding an assignment and have enjoyed typing this instead, thank you for your time

EDIT: changed the images to links, i didn't realize they would come up that big
