I suspect you also suffer from anxiety, and the depression resulting from it. I've been on meds for about 3 years, and they do a good job controlling those thoughts that contribute to the feeling of "helplessness". I think the hardest part was, recognizing that those feeling were referred to as "anxiety" by everyone else. They would be better described as re-ocurring terror. I didn't know how to get help because, I didn't know how to describe my feelings/experiences. Just something to think about.

I hit rock-bottom a couple years ago, and made peace with myself, at that time. I decided that I wasn't going to kill myself, and that I had to accept the fact that I will , most likely, be alone for life. Now I don't expect anything, from anyone, and I'm used to it. You sound as though you are gravitating towards a similar point in life. My opinion to you would be, choose life. You only get 1 chance.

The fact that I don't believe in god, is probably what saved my life. If I thought "heaven" really existed, I think I would of went there long ago. I do firmly believe that this is my only chance at life,so I plan to stick around as long as possible, even though it sucks most of the time.
