I've only just started watching TNG - never seen it until now. I've finished watching Season 1. It's not as boring as I expected but it's not exactly great either...

The first season of TNG was an embarassment. I would advise anyone looking to get into the universe to skip it. The stories, characters, effects, and production values all improve dramatically in the seasons afterwards.

For me, DS9 was the best series of the bunch. It managed to take the trappings of Star Trek and push it the furthest.

Paradise Towers and Dragonfire were the best of that season of Doctor Who...

Funnily enough, at the time I preferred Paradise Towers for the comedy element. Dragonfire seems to me to be such a great story killed by bad SFX. I remember the 1987 convention in Sydney University where I got to meet Fire Escape... cool. Turlough was there too, but Fire Escape was more interesting (to me, anyway).

The Sea Devil deaths by Hexachromite in Warriors of the Deep were pretty bad too, but since they happened near the end of that story, most people would already have turned their TV sets off in disgust (it's a strong competitor to Timelash). BTW: WOTD also had the funniest death ever in Doctor Who... the "let's dance and then karate-kick a bulletproof electrified sea monster is so slow that we could have simply walked around it" death...

What were you watching.... The dominators is about as kinky as Doctor Who ever gets... How many times did Zoe's kit fall off ?

I think the consensus is that TNG was at its best around Season 3 (with "The Best of Both Worlds").

I'll be looking forward to that then, but I have to watch the episodes in order, starting with S1 - or not at all (that's why I waited so long before watching the series).

dont compare star wars with star trek to begin with they have both fans out there Smile

they complain about how a parsec is different between a parces in starwars then in startrek
they complain about how a lasersword cant be used in startrek
they complain about why a stardestroyer cant take on voyager etc

so dont compare both universe , both has something both are different
keep that in mind

As a kid, I used to like both Star Wars and Star Trek, but now I can't stand either one.

LOL, I remember that... WTF was she thinking? (stupid ape primitivesssssss!) Stike's death in "The Two Doctors" was pretty gory too... he's covered in his own Sontaran blood after being zapped in the Kartz-Reimer machine, and then he gets completely vaporized except for his leg, LOL. There was also a scene in "Tomb of the Cybermen" which received numerous complaints for being too violent (you probably know the one I'm talking about) where the half-converted guy tears one of the Cybermen a new one.

I seem to remember quite a bit of blood in Lytton's torture/death scenes in Attack of the Cybermen too...

Much as I prefer star wars, you have to consider that its "a long long time ago" compared to Star Trek which is obviously in the future. The Trek ships are newer and faster - I think they could outrun and outmaneouver the bigger Star Wars vessels, (Star Destroyers etc). I don't think they could out maneuver a tie or falcon in an asteroid field though.

The Trek characters could probably outshoot modern stormtroopers who, by the time of ANH are less than half-clones and mostly recruits. The new recruits can't shoot for sh... while the clones of EP3 were fast enough to outshoot their Jedi masters under order 66.

ummm... If you're referring to what I think you are referring to, the problem isn't that each series has its own concept of parsec. The problem is that parsec is a real unit of measurement, which was not used intelligibly in Star Wars.

Although obviously it was just one line, nothing much.

When I watched that story, I was more interested in the Quarks.

Here's the first 10 minutes of The Dominators, and the death I mentioned occurs at 7 minutes, 30 seconds.

I think people try to read too much into things.

SW is a long long time ago....
(so, lets assume that if a long time ago is 10 years, then long long is 20 right... )
so 1977-20 = 1957 (of course we can assume long long time is more than 20 years really).
but....
Episodes 1-3 (dunno if they mention parsecs - I don't think they do but if they did, it would be 1957-50 = 1907.

Possible... anyway, maybe they mention it in KOTOR? which would date it at 907. (earth time).

The first star measurements were taken by Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel in 1838 and the word parsec was first used in in an astronomical publication in 1913.

So, it must have been us that got it wrong.... since the Star Wars usage most certainly predates us.

aw.... I know this is crap....

Thing is, I always expected that SW was using it in a different context. ie: that Parsec in SW was an abbreviation for something other than "parallax of one second of arc".

Same as I assumed that the "duck talk" was about space ducks, not normal ducks. I forgot where that happens in SW now. Maybe excised footage from ANH.

Wow thanks... I haven't seen the dominators for about 10 years. That is a brief but horrific death... personally I thought that the guy in a curtain/dress a few seconds earlier was a more horrific image though.

The Quarks and Krotons were always underused... Remember the book, "The Bodysnatchers" where there's a dalek saucer approaching and you're expecting all hell to break loose, then it lands and it's full of Quarks... that was a cool moment.

.....I thought this was a star trek thread but the "moderator" helped me hijack it into a doctor who one... Very Happy

(sorry)... I'll try to post some Star Trek comments soon.

.

You got it wrong. The novel was Alien Bodies, and it was the Krotons (or rather, A Kroton) that was inside. Add that to a hair-trigger Time Lord, Faction Paradox, a being who only exists in concept, a half-insane human soldier and a living TARDIS, and you have one of the most bizarre auctions in history. And what's more is that the Doctor is there. Twice over.

First, Autism Speaks attacks me for my autistic identity. LPP attacks me for my belief that you dont have to fit his "alpha male" profile to get a woman. Ragtime attacks me because my faith in jesus doesn't include anti-gay tirades. The Cinephile attacks me for being christian. Thomas1138 attacks me because i'm a gamer. You will NOT take the last bastion of my identity away from me!
