Well, I've just finished watching Season 2 and it ended with a very hollow plop.

The story... I forgot the title but...

Commander Riker gets infected by a plant thorn and is about to die in one hour, which is great considering that's the length of the episode. They decide to put him to sleep and he starts dreaming of Star Trek... what else...

At first he's dreaming about the nice bits (mostly his love conquests) which makes the infection want to do some conquesting of its own... He's watched by Deanna Troy who makes a show of getting a bit squishy over his thoughts.

Finally they realise that Rikers dreams are affecting the infection so they hurt him enough to cause him to have nightmares (again about previous episodes of Star Trek). They notice the infection slowing but that's not enough... because there's still time in the episode.... so they show the same (sad) clips again, this time faster... and the infection decides that it's had enough Star Trek for one day and magically quits his body.

I can only surmise that they ran out of budget and ideas because out of the two seasons I've watched so far, this is by far the worst story I've seen.

Actually, I heard that he was just cheesed off that he didn't get to play Darth Vader again. No Christmas cards to George Lucas anytime soon, I think he'd sooner send them to Barry Letts.

Dunno why Bryan Hayles didn't get any royalties from Star Wars.... after all, they just changed the ice lord from green to black, from ice lord to sith lord and ... geez, they even kept the same actor.

Uhh, no they didn't. Alan Bennion played the Ice Lord in The Curse of Peladon (amongst other things), and he was a good guy. Dave Prowse played the Minotaur in The Time Monster, along with Hotblack Desiato's bodyguard from the TV version of The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

on science world channel they show a series called how techies changed the universe

that is a program based on nerds who used the series as a starting point for their inventions ; believe it or not the ipod is based on star trek .Some palm computers are based on star trek.
the miniturisation of chips is based on star trek. the computer in star trek (TOS) was an idea from the authors of star trek not based on real machines. It is people like Jobs of apple who were nerds and fans of star trek who used the star trek to evolve items to what they now are

maybe we travel in warpdrive manor to pluto and back in 2 mins al thanks to star trek

the borg is a reaction as a warning what tech can do to a modern world (there are inventors who use stuff from the borg like building in a chip in a arm to move a robotarm)

deep space nine had cardassian computers on board and federation people couldnt use it but after a while they did . It is like running a unix system on a windows computer or using a keyboard with russian alfabet. That was a warning aswell

there is a town in the us called vulcan

ps was that not one of the old timelords seen above ?

Well, I only got to see one season of Star Trek (TOS), because I was too young to stay up 'till 10 to watch it.

I think any series with good, solid stories to tell, is good sci-fi. I like Star Wars. I like Star Trek. I even like Enterprise and the first 3 Star Wars movies..Wink

There's a whole Star Trek vs. Star Wars subculture on the Internet, called 'Trekwars'. Endless argument over who were better targets; red shirts or storm troopers. There's lots of crossover fanfic, including Shadows of the Night, a 62 (I think) chapter odyssey where 7 of 9 marries Luke Skywalker...what a hoot...Wink It's marginally interesting.

Star Wars and Star Trek both made conscious decisions on technology, capabilities, etc., to tell the stories they wanted to. They're just TV shows and movies...

Star Trek (TNG) season one was written in the same hyper style that the Original Series (TOS)
was. The trick is only to watch episodes where Riker has a beard...Wink

and anyone who ever thinks all Star Wars is good should find a copy of the Star Wars Christmas special...painful...Wink

I tend to like Star Trek more, because there's 850 hours of episodes, vs., oh, about 15-20 hours of Star Wars (though there's supposed to be this animated series coming up...Wink

But I don't dislike either.

Well, I'm almost finished the famed "third" season of STNG and I'm afraid that personally I don't think it's as good as Seasons 1 and 2. For one thing, the shows are starting to repeat themselves - they've obviously run out of ideas...

eg: making a season;

- a story about someone wanting data (actually S3 has two)
- a story about Deanna Troy's mother
- a story about Klingon/People relationships
- a story about Q
- a story about an adventure in the Holodeck
- a story about some sort of infection that does something to the crew's emotions

There's a few other patterns emerging too.

Deep Space Nine is by far my favorite of the trek series. Darker, fuller character development, deeper investigation of the species involved and conflict between the main characters.

I'm a big B5 fan too. Was relieved when SciFi picked up the final year. I wrote a term paper on Chaos and Order because of it.

I'm starting out on Season 7 of the Next Generation... so I'll soon have watched all of them.

What comes next, Voyager? DSN? Enterprise?

Sorry - I'd never watched Trek other than the originals (and the films) before this year.

There are good elements to Star Trek - it can actually be pretty interesting. Wrath of Khan and First Contact are both great. However, I don't plan on watching the new J.J. Abrams movie. Star Trek, in my opinion, runs on a fairly narrow and limited formula. There's only so much you can do with it. I think they've milked this cow for all that it's worth, and it's time to move on.

Star wars is better then star trek!
no stupid multiple levels of warp, then wormholes, then whatever it was that the borg used to travel with...
no q
better movies (no ST1: The SFX, ST3: corny cop-out for spock, ST5: Shatner can't direct, ST7: Lets Kill Shatner... erm... why didn't anyone cry?, Nemesis... zzzzz go look in a mirror).
series that didnt suck (SW at least does one long story well).
Finally.....Shades of Grey... omg... was this the worst, lamest bit of TV I've ever seen... why not watch trailers all night instead.

The fact that Star Trek technically has MORE movies is irrelevant. Quality is what counts. Sure, Lucas sh** the bed with the prequels, but that's just three movies (three if you consider Episode III to be a good movie, which I don't, really). Star Trek has the first, third, fifth, seventh, ninth, and tenth entries to deal with as baggage. I'd rather sit through the entire prequel trilogy than watch Nemesis again. Also, it has Voyager. (I never watched Enterprise, but I hear it was just as bad).

Oh, and I like how you ignore the fact that Generations took a sh** all over the philosophy of the series with that whole Nexus crap. At least the supernatural elements fit well with what Lucas intended. (Though he apparently took a page out of the Generations book by completely undermining the concept in Episode I).

Don't get me wrong - I like Star Trek (or rather, what it used to be). I just find Star Wars more exciting. Nonetheless, I don't plan on EVER attending any current or future entry to either series. They've both been milked dry.
