Other than one case in which a mother wanted to name her unborn baby "the thing" , I don't mind uncommon names. My children, if I ever have any or adopt any, will have uncommon (because they're old) names as well.
I do however have get annoyed if I open the newspaper and read 4 or 5 announcements about children with the same first name and just different second names. Because gosh, it's so annoying to be in class with 5+ people who share (your) a name!

LOL. What, exactly, is a "stupid" name? Just because you don't like a name doesn't make it "stupid." I hope you don't become a teacher, or I'll feel sorry for anyone in your class who's not a Mary, John, or Elizabeth.

Tammy is to a name. I have met people with that name. Tammy can also be a nick name for Tamera.
There are name out there I don't like either. But I wouldn't make fun of them for it or shun them. if they don't like their name, they can go to court to have it changed. People have done that before. People make up names all the time and some of them I actually like. |

I liked the site Baby's Named a Bad, Bad Thing because some of the names on that site are very amusing. I have to wonder if there really is someone out there named Wadine or Sharmonica.
Of course in real life I manage to bite my tongue when someone says their name is P'trisha because it's not her fault her mom skipped a vowel, but if someone on the internet says "Do you think I should name my baby girl 'Severin'?" I will probably respond that I don't think it's a good name. |

*roll eyes* I already said: I KNOW TAMMY IS A NAME!!!!! I WAS FOUR AND HAD NEVER HEARD IT BEFORE!!!!! Do you even read the posts???? I already SAID I like the name Tammy now and I work with a Tamara that hates being called Tammy. And then there's the country singer Tammy Wynette, I like her too.
Westernwild: I think I already explained what I think is a stupid name but I'll repeat. I hate trendified names like Bayden, Kayden, Zayden that sound made up and come into fashion. I read an article that brand names are becoming big: Chanel, Prada etc. They are stupid names, they have no thought put into them and are given to sound cool. Some names are weird but have a cultural or special meaning. I know a girl called Nilab, which is not a nice sounding name but it is Afgan for "blue sky" and it was a name that meant something to her mom. I also mentioned that John Travolta named his son Jet because of his love of planes, but the name has become trendified by incrowders wanting designer names for their kids. Incidentally, the Tamara that I work with heard about Bayden and said "Names like that do my head in." So I have some support in my name hating mission

me and my boyfriend put alot of thought into our childs name and the end result was great, boy: Skyler Alexander girl: Trinity Laureen
Every one I have told seem to like them because they are different but anyhow I don't really care what the rest of the world thinks of my baby's name because it is my baby!!!
Yes, but it's not YOUR name. You can't play with my toy! It's mine! Mine mine mine mine! MOOOOOOOM! They're making fun of my pretentious designer baby naaaaaaaaame!

Ugh and in the next part they have the name Shaden. SHADEN IS NOT A NAME!!!!! That goes in the BaydenKaydenZayden category. |

I'm the exact opposite.
I tend to think better of people with strange names, and look down on those with common names until I force myself not to. Back in Aberaeron school there were three people in my year called Gethyn (a common name in Wales), and I used to refer to them as the Shotoclones (Street-Fighter reference for characters with the Ryu / Ken moveset). Gethyn Jones, Gethyn James and Gethyn Williams never much liked me either.
In some respect, I just screw up my face somehow whenever someone mentions calling their offspring "Mary" or "Peter", and part of me cries inside that yet another Mary or Peter clone is being added to the world.
A name should be a distinct identifier... Nothing could be more embarassing than being mixed up with someone else because they have the same damned name.
Which is why I want to get mine changed eventually to something so entirely outlandish that nobody else in the world will have the same. I'm still not sure exactly what.
... I'm just glad my only friend at Aberaeron had an unusual spelling for his: Benn. Two N's. I probably wouldn't have even spoken to him if he'd had the usual One.

Wow I've never even heard the name Gethyn! Yeah I'm a bit bored by ordinary names like Emma, Sarah, Jack, Harry but they are far and away better than BaydenKaydenZayden. I heard some TERRIBLE ones recently - 3 siblings called Brayden, Kellen and Kendrie. Kellen is a boy, and Brayden and Kendrie are GIRLS. Those poor poor children.  There is a balance between dead dull ordinary and pretentious designer - or just plain weird! It depends where you live too and also the generation - the names Lisa and Michelle are horrifyingly common for 30 - 35 year olds, but I haven't met any under 20. Would you seriously think better of someone called Chikote (pronounced Shikotay)?? I seriously know of someone who named their child that *shudder*
Spokane Girl: No problem but if you are going to snap you should read the whole post, otherwise you are flaming someone for no reason. A few people missed the part that I was only four and spoke out about me being mean or stupid for not knowing the name (FYI Tammy is not a terribly common name where I live, I've only known that one Tammy, a few Tamaras, two Tamsyns and a Tamlyn.) |

I think the only reason I got mine was that my Da was tired of suffering alone...
now there's something called 'neologisms', that a lot of people will use on their children; imagine someday, you'll be voting for Senator Shenequa, or President Synethia...they had a check one time, and in a Chicago school district that had something like 2,000 different, unique names.
Thing that gets me is foreign names, mainly South Asian. Nothing against them, but I don't know sometimes if I'm sending email to a man or woman. Makes for some awkward times. In a few years I'll have a handle on it, though... |

I don't care for made-up names, either. I love names, but mostly for their meanings. Why would someone want to name their child something that didn't mean anything? Now, I don't mind people using common words or place name for their children's names, so long as they have some meaning to the parents. I love the old Puritan names, like Mercy or Freelove (not joking, it was actually someone's name. I'm pretty sure it didn't have the same connotation it does now. )

I remember I hated the name Courteney Cox and her husband named their child. Coco. Lot of celebrities give their kids weird names. I feel sorry for them but hey they can always get their names changed when they are grown up.
I want to name my kid Spokane but my boyfriend won't let me, my parents agreed and so did his. I might give him or her a name from, Benny & Joon. Benjamin or Juniper but not Ferguson. I hate that name on a person. It's okay as a last name though.
