Thanks for posting that Hashberry...very interesting. It makes me wonder if autistics do not like to look at eyes because so much of the emotiional expressions of the other person are "negative" towards us...disapproval, anger, confussion and we are sensitive to it ? I am mostly theorizing based on my own childhood of such looks from my mother. I can especially recall my mother use to scrunch up her lips when she was mad at me and it was like being slapped...I was scared to death when she would get that look. It really hurt. I also find it very painful when someone has a "fake smile" and yet I can tell that they are really angry or maybe just because I can tell it's fake...it's a scary feeling . _________________ Just because one plane is flying out of formation, doesnt mean the formation is on course....R.D.Lang

I tried to imagine the eyes with a whole face, and I think it made the test easier. I got a 29. _________________ º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,

Your score: 25
A typical score is in the range 22-30. If you scored over 30,
you are very accurate at decoding a person's facial expressions
around their eyes. A score under 22 indicates you find this quite difficult.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The correct answers for the ones you missed are:
4: insisting
7: uneasy
17: doubtful
18: decisive
19: tentative
23: defiant
24: pensive
25: interested
29: reflective
31: confident
32: serious
I found the female eyes hardest to read. |

I find it somewhat annoying that I didn't recognize flirtatious or interested.
BTW, did anyone else notice that these faces were somewhat stereotyped by gender? |

fasinating thread--very informative, espcially Nottingham research.
I scored 30-my son refused.
This makes perfect sense-identifying emotion in eyes. This could be why my son percieves what isn't visible, the underlying emotion. Or, when he is confused if someone is speaking nicely but has mean eyes.
I"ve always been bothered by people that lack emotions in their eyes-disturbing to me. Their eyes look blank, unreadable I suppose.
Or-maybe people on the spectrum study expressions in order to compensate for confusion in understanding pitches and vocal tones as expressions of emotions.
I am frightened by eyes. If someone stares to deeply it freaks me out and I become speechless. Eyes have always been important to me. I can stare at my son and if he stares back for a few seconds he reactes as if I've sent a wave of energy to him-it makes him hyper for a moment.
They say the eyes are the window to the soul.
I suppose we have to be careful with interpretating eyes and facial expressions. Not too long ago, the facial expressions on a face were evidence enough to admit someone into an asylum. |

I don't think it even has to be negative. After knowing my own husband for 23 years, i still cannot usually hold a gaze with him when he is being loving or flirty. His presence is my safest, happiest place in the world, yet, i can do it for possibly 5-10 seconds max. It is sometimes hard to do and somehow just too much. Too much of what i can't even say; it's too intense. It is also easier at some times than at others but i don't know a pattern yet. I wish i could learn how to master it because i know it would make him happy. Maybe autism is just random unaccountable fear. It makes me wonder if it is not a matter of not feeling but of feeling far too much and shutting down, just like sensory or sound sensitivities. |

| Perhaps I'm not getting something, I scored a 1. They're eyes, I don't see any emotion. |

I hate those tests. I keep on looking in all those eyes and seeing nothing, and wishing there was an answer that said "mild contentment with no emotional overtones."
I mean, who walks around that full of emotion all the time? does no one ever feel no over riding emotions at any point.. just mild contentment or are they always full of anger or lust or envy or love or happiness or sadness?
And where are the options for "sun in eyes" or "squinting" or "lowlight" or "thinking about something else and not really paying attention to visual input anyways"?
I got 9 right |

The eyes do not have it topic
Or I do not have the eyes. Oh, my god, I scored 5. Those eyes...most of them looked the same! I do not get it. No wonder I am disliked. _________________ Radical Aspergian
