I fell about laughing when I found out Kennedy's 'Ich bin ein Berlinner' comment translated into 'I am a doughnut'. No wonder the Germans all cheered and laughed. They must've thought he was the funniest thing since Groucho Marx.

I voted for Cal (wonder who the other 2 people are aside from Orwell). I'd agree with Orwell on FDR and the depression; it is quite amazing how policies that ultimately failed and brought about greater disaster are hailed as great successes today (and judging from the poll, it looks like the man is also viewed by many as one of the greatest presidents). If Bush were more popular (and there was some "serious" event such as the great depression and WW2), I wonder if his policies would be viewed as great successes, ceteris paribus.

Well, basically, the Cal voters are Sargon(you), me, Orwell, and mysterious person X.

I think Macbeth may have also gone for Cal, since he asked who did nothing except quietly run the country in an efficient manner. I really am surprised that Carter is getting voted for, my impression was that he was fairly unpopular and tends to be rated almost as low as Hoover in most studies/polls. BTW Dox, where's that offensive post you promised us about Carter?

Afterall, Carter was president when the hostages got taken in Iran in 1979, and did nothing to get them out. They didn't get freed until after Ronnie took over, and it's even doubtful whether he had much to do with it.

Well, he tried to use a military operation to get them out (ironically), but it failed miserably.

actually the deal was done before carter left office but wasn't signed until ronnie was in.

he had nothing to do with it. just like ronnie's roll in ending the cold war is diminutive compared to the toll that socialism took on the USSR economically and more directly lead to the collapse.

ronnie's only accomplishment was getting more crack into black neighborhoods.

Carter is usually rated between 15-20 in most historical ratings. Hoover is at the bottom towards Grant, Buchanuan, and Nixon. Some liberal polls even put Carter as one of the greatest. [I think Carter is the 2nd Best President in History.]

I'm working on it, got distracted attacking poor reasoning elsewhere in PPR. I'm still trying to decide whether I aught to abuse carter himself, or people that honestly think he was the best president of the last century. That's a tough call, they both are so richly deserving of abuse...

I'm still waiting for people to explain why excatly Carter is the greatest president of the 20th century (or second best in history).

These rankings are probably based on popularity, right? If so, it does highlight this weirdness people have when ranking their Presidents. Aside from Watergate, Nixon's presidency wasn't that bad really, particularly in the foreign arena, such as with China and leaving Vietnam (his domestic policy left some to be desired, but that is true for many Presidents). FDR's policies were basically an expansion on Hoover's (further making this kinda "weird" since most people claim to dislike Hoover's policies, but love FDR's despite them being so similar) and then some more fascist-like policies.

i find it interesting how carter is so polarized in judgements of his presidency. i don't think he's nearly as good or nearly as bad as he's always made out to be.

Weird thing is, even though Nixon based him wanting to kick Lennon out of the US on a 1968 marijuana and drugs conviction, Lennon himself was actually trying to stir up the population into voting at the 1972 election. So what if his 'Sometime In New York City' album had contentious material like 'Attica State', 'John Sinclair', 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' and 'Woman Is The Nigger Of The World'; It didn't excuse Nixon and the FBI taking the action they did in trying to have him kicked out. Also, isn't it funny how Nixon made Elvis Presley an honorary DEA deputy, when Presley was abusing all those prescription drugs and getting freebies off any doctor he could convince to prescribe them. Weird, really weird.

Glad I'm not alone in the appreciation for Theodore Roosevelt.
