My son is 12. At home he is an ongoing, monologue. He talks, hums, makes noises, sings, repeats songs & commercials, repeats me, talks at the cat, yells at the cats, talks to himself in the mirror while brushing his teeth etc etc etc. He carries ion this way from the point he opens his eyes in the morning, until finally he mumbles himself to sleep. I feel like all of this is different than schizophrenia. I look at it more like a stim. That's what he's doing, just constantly stimming through making noise.

EDIT:"your not a donut" or "your not a mustastashed twinkie"

My son would totally say things just like this too, he has an active mind and he'll through stuff out there just out of nowhere.

The things you are describing is not schizophrenia. Actually have you had him tested for Asperger's. I have those exact same issues as well because I have a cat and a lot of times I would just say the cats name for no reason. I also have Asperger's and yes all of that is a "stim", but also because of my Asperger's I have a tendency to say what is in my head out loud. I do that all the time. When I am stressed, I also talk out loud my stressful situation and talk it in the way I needed it to end, and not the way it did. this is how I show anxiety, but it is anxiety about a situation that has happened that did not go my way. Also I may do this, if I am nervous about going into a situation, I have anxieties running through my head thinking about what if it doesn't go my way, so i talk out loud to make the anxieties go away, by telling them my plans about how I am going to face the situation, so that way I would feel less nervous.
Part of my Asperger's is I always either have to be mentally and/or physically stimulated at all times, and talking and thinking, which causes me to talk all day, is part of the mental stimulation, so yes that is why it is stimming, which is anything that is bought on by need of stimulation.
If he starts talking out loud and he is talking about anything that may cause concern and/or is very stressed when talking out loud, I would try to talk to him and ask if there is anything that is bothering him. When something bothers me I talk out loud in a very stressful voice and/or say things that sound which would make someone think I may do something harmful. But it is mostly because I am really stressed, and if I had someone to talk to about my stresses, I would calm down and feel better and those anxieties would go away. Some things I have anxieties about, I may be afraid to tell anyone, so this is the only way I can get it out of my head without any one else knowing. So if he does this, he just needs someone to talk to about his stress.
When you do approach him, tell him you are there for him. Remember, sometimes he may be afraid to tell you what is really going on,especially if it is something he may be afraid to share. if he does tell you something, do not judge him and/or panic. Just listen and be careful not to talk until he is finished. A lot of times it may take him a while to figure out what and how he may want to discuss the issue. Listening and being there is the most important thing you can do.
If it is something like talking to the cat and/or minor it is okay to leave it alone. He may be reliving a happier time and/or anything he enjoys. I dot hat all the time(which to the people around me, it is the best signal to them that I am extremely happy).
Do not worry, he is okay. I would get him tested for Aspergers and if he already diagnosed, than it is probably just the Asperger's talking(as my doctor's put it). I hope this helps a lot. Good luck with everything.

oi8itall, I used to do this quite alot as a kid, for often I tended not only be shy but, found it more easier in terms of relating things despite the fact, others(school children) probably thought I was nutty as hell. I did not however go around carrying on a conversation as, if I was 2 people nope, for that might possibly be seen as schizo-typical mannerisms just, tended to talked to myself, actually mumbled one could say.. These days however, I don't do that much of self-talking for, I wish not to be seen as crazy  or something yet, honestly, I have at times talked to myself at times when I feel I'm not going to get witch-hunted for such...

I talk to myself all the time especially when I'm thinking. I feel I'm fully sane when doing it because I know exactly what I'm doing, why I'm doing it, what it will accomplish, and how others will perceive it. Thankfully though, finally learning the ropes around NTville mitigates the weird factor.

Thank you very much for your thoughtful reply. We are in the process of having him evaluated for Aspergers. When I did the online Aspie quiz, I myself scored 136, so this tells me that we're likely very similar. He's got a lot of things that don't seem to equal Aspergers, so it could be PDD-NOS.

Again, thank you for your reply, I will keep all of these things in mind.

I do it all the time. Always did.

Never did gibberish, though.

I've entertained getting a bluetooth and wearing it all the time so people would think I'm talking to someone real.
