I switched when it first came out in 93. The reason I switched is because I wanted to write programs, and Windows compilers were very expensive. I became a fan when I realize that I could run it without having to reboot all the time. After I learned about Linux and became adept in its workings, I came to appreciate its security, reliability, and its price (free). I also like the fact that I could created and distribute derivative works and not be penalized as long as I made the source code of my contribution available.

I have written code for both Linux and Windows and have found that by far, Linux is a much easier platform for developing applications. I also like the fact that i do not have to clean crap from my hard drive every other month or defragment the hard drive every other week. More reasons can be found at http://www.freelink.cx.

I've never had a problem of window crashing. Only Explorer.

A very slow progression, for me. I did some Unix kernel coding, before Linux even existed. Tried various distros down the way. Gradually ran out of any desire to see Windows. Started running a local Apache, 24/7, nearly a year ago, and that wouldn't sit well with XP requiring a reboot every time I brush my teeth.

So far I'm just in the process of switching to it.
I've tried a bunch of different distros. Ubuntu I'm kinda fond of as it has a lot of software available for it.

Zenwalk Appeals to me aswell for reasons i'm not entirely sure of.

Ever since Mac went to x86 architecture and started getting more popular, their OS Roadmap has been drifting away from what I'm looking for in a computer.

What i like (ed) about mac i now like in Linux. Plus i have the freedom to pick my own hardware and have the option to build a system tailored better to my needs, rather then just what marketing thinks i should need.

At anyrate different operating systems suit different people better. The tricky part is finding just the right one for yourself.
