| Bands that influenced the emo genre, like the Cure, Nirvana etc are/were awesome but bands like My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco etc just make me cringe they're so obviously contrived. They're just the modern equivalent of the 80's hair bands, no substance whatsoever. MCR just sounds like Then Jericho to me |

don't kid yourself.
Both are classic alternative rock bands.
They certainly influenced the genre but there's NO WAY they're emo. Let's take The Cure: Even the darkest Cure songs ("Siamese Twins", "All Cats Are Grey", "The Funeral Party", "One Hundred Years") aren't emo. And how can you call a band emo who make songs like "Let's Go To Bed", "Mint Car", "Close to Me" or "The Only One"? _________________ here be dragons |

my chemical romance is emo now? back in my day the red house painters typified the emo sound.
but then, back in my day emos weren't extra-whiney goths, and they wore tight sweaters and silly glasses.
i used to be with it, but then they changed what 'it' was. now, what i'm with isn't it, and what's 'it' seems weird and scary to me. get off my lawn! _________________ What will happen in the morning when the world it gets so crowded that you can't look out the window in the morning?

I believe Depeche Mode is Alternative and New Wave. However everyone says Depeche Mode is emo. | this my friend is because allot of people take terms like emo and apply them to everything that might fit their vague misunderstood interpretation of that term
as we have seen ITT death metal gets similar treatment
to most of the people who use it emo means overly emotional or sad music
| Xanderbeanz wrote: | i'd never really have that problem, as my opinion on music is based on about 80% crap i make up on the spot, and 20% emotional or soul...so if someone disagrees on my opinion on music i'll be able to talk until they give up and leave ^.^
and i don't respect much of the human race, especially when it comes to their musical opinons, i see them as sheep who listen to whatever the damned record companies tell them to instead of what i tell them to.
this is why i try not to talk about music to people who dont agree with me....i keep that kind of informed discussion for my close group of musician friends.
[meaningless tag i dont like the sound of] music is harmonically, timbrally and rhythmically dull, also it smells bad and i head they are all pedophiles. at least punk had energy.
so there we go, feel free to call me an elitist idiot if you want, but at least i preempted and laughed at your criticism so if you do ill have been laughing at you...haha |
i loled
EDIT: ok that was too harsh, you probably do know what your talking about but you sound like a dumbass (as i know i often do) _________________ http://www.last.fm/user/mouapp/

I'd try to distinguish "emo" from "sad music" really. Some may not agree with the terms, but this is what I think:
Emo = teenage whinging/angst about the silliest of things, ie. breaking up or "dumb parents". Watered-down pop-punk for clueless teens of today. Highly pretentious in the fact it's usually over-dramatic.
Sad music = The sorrow and emotion is there, but without the whingy crying teenagerness to it, ie. depression without the pretentious dramatic feel to it. Some people would call this "real emo" but I'd rather not use "emo" for them. |
