I am a self proclaimed "Pantheistic Pagan".

As opposed to what? Is there such a thing as a monotheistic pagan? I thought paganism was inherently polytheistic.

It varies a lot between traditions, and between individuals.

Some pagans would say their mode of belief is polytheism proper, in which the gods and goddesses are distinct, separate beings. (I've heard many people of the Nordic traditions state that this is their stance, although again, it varies between individuals.)

Some have a belief which is closer to what you'd call monistic polytheism, i.e. there is one Being which is beyond limited human comprehension, but we seek to understand aspects of that Being in the form of the gods and goddesses. This is actually the most common form of belief I've come across in pagan circles in the UK. (Some insist that ancient pagan cultures thought this way; on balance, I believe the Egyptians possibly did, and the Greeks may well have done at a later stage, but I don't think we can speak for many of the others - especially ones, like the Celts, who had a largely oral tradition, so the more subtle elements of their cosmology have probably been lost.)

Yes. I've come across that dispute before. Hinduism, for instance, is essentially a monotheistic religion.

During the nights of Yule a tree would be brought indoors as a means of inviting the forest spirits into your home for a warm place to stay. A evergreen tree would be used because they stay green thourghout the winter which represents eternal life through all seasons. The pentagram (5 point star) was placed at the top as a symbol of the five elements, and sweets would be hung on the branches as offerings to the spirits.

You know what? I wasn't sure what you where talking about until I re-read my post, and I got it.
Tree... stumped.... ha ha ha.

I knew about christmass covering for yule . But where did the christmass tree tradition come from?

evil spirits killed plants in winter
evergreens stayed green in winter
therefor evergreens ward of evil spirits
therefor if i put evergreenms in my house it will be free of evil spirits.

If you consider every member of the Hindu pantheon --hundreds of thousands of deities-- to be but manifestations of the the Source, the primal god Brahma who is a god of pure light, pure creative energy. Incidentally, this is rather how I think of God in general.

Why would someone not want to be a Christian? Christianity is the most loving and caring religion there is. Dawn

Pantheistic. Not Polytheistic. You're right, paganism (as it is historically constructed) is a polytheism of a god and a goddess; I'm not sure how a pantheistic paganism would work.

I'm just a straight pantheist, a monist (as opposed to a monotheist); maybe a pantheistic pagan would be a straight-up dualist instead of a dual-theist.
