Yep, I'm also a sun-sneezer. But I tend to like it.... I mean, a good sneeze.

is it linked in with a form of synaesthesia? sure sounds like it....

Migraines may be from light sensitivity or photophobia. If i didn't wear glasses my eyes would be a stinging, watery mess. Not to mention getting constant headaches.

I don't think it is related to synaesthesia. That's experiencing a sense from another sense, although those people that have that usually have really sensitive senses anyway. I have mild synaethesia.

I found an article for people - http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=loo ... r-a-sneeze

thanks for referral to the article pensieve.

i have mild synaesthesia too - very mild - but there is definitely a crossover of sensory experiences...a blurring and confusion of them at certian times. it fluctuates however like my AS stuff. It make going to the dentist very weird!

am aware the migraines are due to light sensitivity. along iwth noise sensitivity and hyposenstivity with taste (everything tastes like cardboard and i throw salt and chilli on everything. )

i am just blown away by the sneezing thing with the sun. wow.

I am thrilled that so many people here can relate to sun-sneezing. But,
it is doubly interesting to me to see just how many people are amazed/skeptical about this phenomenon. Many of us who do experience it took it for granted and thought everyone did it. Some who do not experience it think that the rest of us are, at worst, making the whole thing up!

Thanks again for all these insightful responses. 8)

I've been interested to see this thread because I have had a sneezing reaction to sunlight on my nose for most, if not all, of my life and never knew that it was a recognised phenomenon with a name. I would not have linked it with my suspected AS, though. I think it has happened with lightbulbs but not nearly as much as with the sun. It is not about heat; it is an itch in my nose which happens specifically when my nose is facing the sun. This itch escalates to a sneeze, sometimes very suddenly, sometimes more slowly. When it happens slowly, I may be transfixed, waiting for it to happen. It is like an aura and I think that the epileptic analogy of an aura is appropriate because a sneeze is another type of seizure which involves a degree of temporary paralysis, depending upon the strength of the sneeze. Anyway, this state of being transfixed with my nose towards the sun, waiting to sneeze, relates to the example quoted earlier in the thread.

My husband, his father and my oldest sneeze in the sun. I think it's hilarious. When they all go outside together, it's like a chorus.

Photic sneeze reflex is a genetic autosomal dominant trait, which causes sneezing when exposed suddenly to bright light, possibly many times consecutively. It is also referred to as photic sneeze response, sun sneezing, photogenic sneezing, the photosternutatory reflex, being photo sensitive, ACHOO syndrome, and "Achooism," with its related backronym Autosomal dominant Compelling Helio-Ophthalmic Outburst syndrome. The condition affects 17 to 35 percent of humans.

I do this, too so I had to look it up.

I sneeze if I look at the sun too---actually, like others have said here---I thought everyone did that. I had no idea it had something to do with wires being crossed. Acacia said it is caused by wires being crossed. This I find interesting because at my last eye exam, the doctor told me I was left eye dominant rather than right eye dominant as most people are. Would this have anything to do with the wires crossed thing? I also see this is something that seems to be more common in the autistic? So I assume my Asperger's might cause this?

I used to sneeze at the sun all my life. It stopped somewhere along 2008. I hadn't notice that change until i read this thread.

One more subject for my list of things to research.

It seems like I always have to sneeze, cough, or clear my throat as soon as I step out the door, even if the sun isn't out. I think the change in temperature and/or humidity can do it just as much as the change in light level.

Left eye dominans, typically occur if a person is, so to say, right-brained (right brain dominans, rather than most people who are left-brained).
This also typically links to left-handedness.

Sneezing and bright lights works for me too. In some cases though it works in reverse. I will get that annoying burning sensation in my sinuses saying that I need to sneeze. But it is stuck there, just burning. So I will have to go find a light source to stare into in order to trigger the sneeze. It doesn't have to be the sun, I can use an ordinary lamp and just get really close to it so that the light fills my field of vision. Then I sneeze about 5 times in a row and the burning sensation in my sinuses is gone.

That's interesting and kind of cool. I sneeze when I pluck my eyebrows. Trade eyebrows for sun.

My goodness, I thought I was the only one for that... haha. Haven't noticed the sun though. Also, if I have a tangle in my hair and try to use a brush I sneeze.
