That's bizarre and illogical. First, Obama is half black and hlaf white, so voting for him would be the absolute opposite of racist voting (by your definition of racist voting). Secondly, it implies that people vote based only on race, which is also highly flawed as Obama was the most qualified candidate for what America needs at this time.

I call sour grapes.

I'm not sure if you noticed this, but the central point of my comment wasn't to belabor the issues (or Obama's nacent decisions about them).

My central point was that voting on the basis of skin color instead of on the basis of issues is STUPID.

I'm relieved that with Mr. Obama's ascenscion to the presidency, we Americans are finally free of the politics of racial victimhood - that which claims that white people oppress black people so much that only white people will always remain in power and that no black person can ever hope to make a significant positive difference in society.

Now a black man has risen above cultural self-hate, and has become the most powerful person in the Free World; and no one can claim any longer that success is impossible for black people, or that staying in school, staying out of trouble, and growing up to become accountable and responsible adults has no place in black culture, either. It's time to look to ourselves and become the best that we can possibly be, and to stop blaming dead antebellum attitudes for holding us back.

It's over, people. It's finally over.

We can finally be free!

Really? Really? you think that because America had the choice between Hillary Clinton and all the baggage she carries, another republican carrying the damage from the present one, (plus the moose shooting redneck YEC running mate), or an eloquent, intelligent, seemingly caring man who happens to be black, and they chose the latter; all of a sudden the racial inequalities in the USA are suddenly void and non-existent; Fnord are you really serious?

Edit: Although it is really a class issue, however due to racial inequalities 'blacks' are over represented in the lower classes

No, Arthur, he's saying that using one's skin color as the sole excuse as to why one needn't even try has officially gone out the window. Believe it or not, there was a time, as recently as last year, when young black men would scoff at anyone trying to get them to work harder and study in school - "Man, it don't make no difference anyhow, nobody's gonna let a brutha get anywhere in this world, I might as well just give up."

Now we have two Harvard-educated attorneys, our President and First Lady, occupying the White House - and oh yeah, they're black.

Psych, try getting the entire clip - what Obama was discussing was a civilian force for those places where our military has displaced the government (Iraq, for instance), because while our armed forces are very good at their job, the prosecution of war, they're not really all that great at putting the pieces back together again afterward. (You might have taken the line about "in order to achieve the national security objectives we have set" as your first clue - panicking about terrorists aside, we've had the whole national-security issue pretty well ironed out around here for a while now...)

I'm with Fnord on this one, finally the victim culture can come to an end and we can all move on. Or at least a lot of people will have lost a major excuse to whine, which will be a huge improvement in that I won't have to listen to it nearly so much.

I can see your sentiment, it would be a bit like me using Aspergers to excuse my behaviour. However just because two black people have reached the pinnacle of US government does not make everybody equal. The american underclass needs much work, you cannot wash away years of generational poverty, generations of underachieving in education, a culture of subjugation; overnight just because a black man is now president. In a situation of extreme unemployment, substandard housing , poor education, third world health system and a complete lack of equality how can you expect people to have self respect in such a situation, saying look at Rice and Obama does not do it. Yes one or two can rise out of the muck, we had a prime minister here that did just that, but people with that sort of drive and ambition are rare

I voted for Obama. I supported him since I went to hear him speak in New Hampshire a year and a half ago. I didn't vote for him because he's (half) black, I voted for him because I percieve that he is an honest, good-hearted man. You are the racist one, not me Twisted Evil

It was hyperbole... but there's a significant amount of truth within it regardless... Teenagers who previously only expressed that "I want to be Tupac when I grow up" are now talking about loftier goals. Regardless of the fact that most of them are picking a goal they won't achieve (president), they are still setting higher goals for themselves. That's the important part.

90+% of blacks typically vote for the Democratic Party, mostly because it doesn't insult them like you and many Republicans do. What really changed this time is that more blacks who wouldn't ordinarily bother to vote got out and did vote - because after centuries of being exploited and shut out of power, they felt like blacks were becoming fully a part of the United States of America. People felt that by electing a president with darker skin, they could show that race was no longer a disqualifying factor. Another barrier falls. It's a great day for America!!

You are talking about setting people up for failure which would have disastrous consequences. If you want the impoverished underclass to have some respec,t show them some, deal with their conditions. Oh and one other thing whilst you are dismissively telling these folk that Obama did it so get of your arse, remember Obama and Rice come from privileged middle class backgrounds, not housing projects
