(The weird surgery is being done by humans who dress up as aliens to throw us off the track.)

They use them to power their spaceships. Didn't you ever watch "Married With Children"?

I speculate (idea without evidence) that what most of us believe to be ordinary housecats are really the remnants of an advanced extra-terrestrial alien superculture. Think about it ... cats have no collarbones and humans do ... cats have vertically-slitted pupils and humans don't ... they also have retractable claws, thick fur, raspy tongues, tails, and the ability to purr - all things that humans don't possess.
