Yes, I can feel the floor/ ground move and I usually don’t like it. Hi Anne, yes it's not a nice feeling - I guess "vertigo" describes the experience. I looked up vestibular system in autism and there are treatments for children these days to strengthen the vestibular system, one of them ...

jaybe-- I can't offer you any solutions but I can say I have felt both of the sensations you experienced. I was in a store at its grand opening in November and it was very crowded. I soon became quite dizzy and realized that if I did not get out of there they would be picked me up off the floor (or...

I just had a realisation today while in a department store I go to sometimes. Several different times while walking around that store I've started to feel dizzy and nauseous. I figured it must've been the lighting or noise. But today waiting in line standing completely still I realised that the floo...

Yes you can do anything, Aspergers comes with traits that make some things difficult. In my experience it doesn't make anything impossible. And it is totally insulting when people tell you to not even try... e.g. "maybe you should be a librarian since being around people is hard for you" o...

I was talking to a friend who I hadn't seen for years, the other day. I was under the impression he might have ADHD because he's very energetic and talkative. But he dropped into the conversation "so that was hard for someone with Aspergers" and continued the story he was telling me. Becau...

In high school: "you can be a librarian or something where you don't need to talk to people"

In my first full time job, which involved client liaison: "Smile more and be friendly"

In my opinion that sounds like a "male" response to the situation, or at least a "male autistic" reaction. Whether females are given more socialisation during their life to be more empathetic, or whether it comes naturally, I'm not sure. I personally would assume that she would b...

Moondust - based on your last post, it sounds reasonable that you could ask for "accommodations" for those issues, without disclosing AS. I have worked in places where the staff I had to deal with insist on face to face "chats", and yet they also demand "Don't email it to me...

Play to your own strengths (which as you said is being a nice guy). Don't try to beat macho idiots at their own game, they've had a lot more practice. Guys like that try to make themselves feel better by picking on what they see as a weakness. If you just react in a self assured manner, without stoo...

@RenaeK - I have had such a similar experience in my life. I always assumed that people felt and thought the same way as me, and after learning more about ASD in the last three years, I've realised that most people don't think the way I do, so I've also had those awkward realisations about interacti...

Belated thanks for the welcomes and ideas - I'll see if someone at Tony Atwoods office can point me in the right direction..
Maybe we can start a compendium of the ignorant responses from doctors

Hi AspieUtah
There seems to be a cluster of ASD specialists in Tony Atwood's home city (Brisbane), but apart from that, nobody seems to know an iota about it, particularly in women

Thanks Roadratt Thanks xile - I live in NSW, I see that headstart is in SA. Thanks for the suggestion anyway. Btw - are you male? I imagine that doctors would be more open to the diagnosis seeing as every medical professional I've brought it up with has said it's something mostly affecting males. Pe...

Hi hiddenautistic, I'm also new here. Those experiences sound so familiar to me. I think I have a degree of face blindness and maybe "voice blindness" for want of a better term - I have issues with phone conversations - if I get a call from someone I don't talk to often or a stranger, and ...

Hi Yigeren, most of the organisations and services here seem to be geared towards children, or adults with autism (lower functioning), but I will have another look around, thanks for the suggestion It is very rare to find people who really know what aspergers is in Australia in my experience  ...

I was told by a GP today that I probably don't have Aspergers because "it's something that males have, and they're usually overweight and you can tell they have it just by looking at their face"........ 8O
