Hello, I'm a non verbal autistic adult who used to speak. I had an operation in August last year and have not been able to speak much since outside of a few very very specific scenarios. I don't have a formal diagnoses of selective mutism, but it would be the best fit I think. I struggle to get word...

Hello, Autism varies a ton, it can often be odd if your collection of traits is uncommon but eventually you find someone like you. I have met a few like me, I am lucky enough to work with someone who has a similar collection of traits as me. We vary in a few places (I'm mathy, she's arty) but in mos...

I don't do that.
I have some dices with questions on each side. When meeting new people I roll the dice and ask the question on the side which faces up. |

The thing is, when I actually do things, I have no trouble... but the problem is starting, for me. Even fun things like going downstairs to watch hockey or reading a book or even watching something on the computer which I'm already in front of seem so monumental to start. It's why it takes me like,...

Hey, I remember being sat in the car driving back from the assessment. They had said yes, defiantly autistic. I was sat in the back of the car. Cuddling lion. I was asking myself had I behaved had I done right. Had I faked it etc etc. It took about a year before I felt comfortable with it. It's been...

Thanks for the kind words :) today's been a great example. Productive day working on a project at the autism hub, she's due to arrive very soon and will then have a relaxed evening unwinding before bed. Rather than getting in a horrible muddle and forgetting to eat or wash while my brain dissolves i...

I struggle with this stuff. At the moment I don't shop alone and I have a babysitter (Literally: http://spacedoutandsmiling.com/tips/how-i-use-support-at-home-why-a-babysitter) who helps me to follow an evening routine. Hopefully in the future I will find ways to do this stuff without so much suppor...

It doesn't bother me much. My friends who look after me describe me as an "advanced 5 year old". This kinda works for me. Maybe when I get. My speech back it will change. I have written about it more here: http://spacedoutandsmiling.com/blog/2016-03-25-accepting-autism-being-5 Jamie + Lion

I got to spend 3 hours in the sensory room at the hub to work on my presentation. I think I have found an angle. Just need to make all the slides now. I can do that tomorrow.
Evening routine starts in an hour. Not too many elephants today. |

Sorry if this post is a bit long. This is just my opinion. The three reasons I think people react the way they do: 1: culture around disability. Time main model of disability is the medical model. Eg a list of things which are considered wrong or write. This is a hangover from how medicine came out ...
