They don’t. They are silent in the words. They are called soft sign and hard sign respectively and just make consonants before them in a word sound phonetically soft or hard accordingly. My current English teacher told me "just write. Don't worry about having it perfect, just make sure you keep writing, even if it's just 'f**k this I don't know what I'm doing" and I think it's the best advice for writing essays.
